NYCC '12: Special Events

Oh my god! I just realized NYCC is only two days away. That’s right. TWO days. What am I going to do? Who am I going to see? What kind of goodies will I get? Will I remember to eat? More importantly, where am I going to go after the con?

Here is a list of all the great events happening after the Javits Center lights dim and the partying begins as well as a few taking place while the sun is out.

Wednesday, Oct. 10

A Celebration of Pop Comics! - 

"Wednesday, October 10th, on the eve of New York Comic Con, Depth Of Field Magazine is proud to present an evening of conversation, refreshments, signings, and general revelry as we celebrate the intersection of comic books and popular music. 

This event take place at Jim Hanley's Universe on West 33rd Street, beginning at 7pm. The panel discussion features an astounding line-up of artists, writers, and commentators, including Charles Soule, Avi Spivak, Jamal Igle, Elizabeth Keenan, Andrew Robinson, John Holmstrom, Ronald Wimberly, David Gallaher, Kieron Gillen, Joe Keatinge, Vivek J. Extreme Makeover: The Comics Edition - 

"Join Jeff Yang, editor of the new graphic novel collection SHATTERED and curator of Marvels & Monsters and Alt.Comics, as he and a celebrity panel of comic book authors and artists discuss how stereotypes ruin stories and turn characters into cliches. The fun really begins when we invite leading local graphic novelists to share their own "Comic Book Extreme Makeovers”. Panelists include Keith Chow, Larry Hama, Jerry Ma, and Greg Pak." Starts at 7:00 PM. Get more information here.

Art Wars - A New Hope Intergalactic Custom Toy Show by Scott Kinnebrew and Jason Chalker at KRNY - 
"The Force will be with us at Kidrobot New York for the one-night only Art Wars – A New Hope Intergalactic Art Show. Going down October 11 from 6-10pm, this Star Wars inspired spectacle will featuring new art and custom toys by Scott Kinnebrew and Jason Chalker. This one night exhibition will be hotter than Tatooine so don’t miss out!" Kidrobot New York is located at 118 Prince St.

*just added Geeks! The Musical -"Geeks! The Musical! follows the adventures of a gaggle of geeks through a Comic Book/Sci-Fi Convention. Will the geek boy find true love and a mint copy of Batman #92? Will the artist and Goth girl sell their avant-garde comic? Will the has-been sci-fi actor get cast in the remake of his old TV show? These questions and more will be answered as they sing, dance and debate if Batman could beat Spider-Man in a fight! Be square, be there!

New York Comic Con Kick-Off Concert with Ben Folds Five -

"Ben Folds Five start it off right with a concert at 8:00 PM in the IGN Theater. The concert is free to all VIP's and 4-Day ticket holders BUT seating is first come, first served and will be extremely limited due to size of the auditorium and popularity of the event. Ultimate Access and Special Access VIP ticket holders will be guaranteed to get into the show first; then, 4-Day ticket holders will be let in until the auditorium is full. The concert is open to all 4-Day ticket holders on a first come, first served basis and we cannot guarantee that all 4-Day ticket holders that want to attend the show will be able to get in."

FANGIRLTV - First LIVE show - Billed as "half talk show, half burlesque, and all geek," the show will feature "Nerd themed BURLESQUE, a lively panel discussion featuring AMAZING Geek Girls, exclusive clips from the FANGIRLTV web series, and GEEKY GO GO! Doors open at 8pm, show at 9pm! Arrive in COSPLAY or with New York Comic Con 2012 Pass! -- ONLY $10 (otherwise, it's still only $15!!!!!)" Takes place at The Producer's Club at 358 W. 44th St. Must be 17+ to enter!

Friday, Oct. 12

ROCK COMIC CON

"ROCK COMIC CON is the first nerd rock music festival of its kind! Wasted Cinema -

"Just in time for New York Comic Con, Wasted Cinema will be showing Adam West's 1966 Batman at our favorite Midtown bad movie night bar, Legends, on Friday October 12. At Wasted Cinema, we do more than just watch awesomely bad movies. You're encouraged to interact and take part in our "toastworthy moments" - movie cues that tell you when to drink along with the absurdity on screen. Movie themed-cocktails and drink specials should add to your enjoyment of this already thoroughly enjoyable film. Plus a live Twitter stream where you can share your commentary, Batman trivia and a raffle to win awesome prizes. A full dinner menu is also available. TruGeek: Ink & Spandex - 

"TruGeek is the newest unabashedly geeky party night in NYC! As NYCC approaches, we all find ourselves with an overabundance of pent up nerdy excitement, and at least one fantastic new costume we need to take on a test run before we hit the con floor. So come out with us and hit two Skrulls with one energy blast!  Enjoy drinks, dancing, and costumes with other like-minded individuals, dressed as our best comic book and superhero alter egos! I guarantee our costumes will look that much better by the end of the night ;-) FREE PARTY! No cover or drink minimum, although we guarantee awesome geeky themed drinks served by our gracious hosts at RBar! Special Guest DJ: DJ Jinduri! Get tickets for our raffle basket! The Image Comics/Multiversity Comics Big NYCC Party -

 "Hosted by the Houndstooth Pub located on 8th Ave between 36th and 37th (a short 3-block walk from the Javits Center), the party will run from 8 PM to 12 AM in the Lower Level of the pub with a $10 donation to the Hero Initiative to get in. It’s a 21+ event, and will assuredly be a fun place for friends, fans and creators to meet, share a drink and mingle. The Big Party will also feature quite a few special Image guests, such as Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples (SAGA), Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore (THE LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE), and Sina Grace, whose new graphic novel NOT MY BAG will be debuting at NYCC! Almost all of Multiversity will be in attendance as well, for those who want to talk beards and cats, and who knows — stick around and a few unexpected additional guests might pop-in as well."

Dances of Vice: Pulp Science Fiction Party -

Saturday, Oct. 13

Head down to All Angels' Church for an intimate concert with Marian and Vesper (of Ben & Vesper). The art gallery opens to the community at 6pm, doors for the concert are at 7pm, music at 7:30pm -- this room is truly exceptional for music.  3rd Annual GGN #NYCC Geek-Out - 
"Every year during New York Comic Con, GGN hosts a fantastic party for geeks and celebs alike to wind down and mingle after a full day of convention madness. It’s a chance for us all to hang with our friends outside of the enormous panel room lines, meet online friends for the first time, and share all the wonderful experiences from the exciting weekend." Starts at 8:00 PM and will be at STITCH Bar & Lounge at 247 37th St.

*Note - Tickets are sold out, but if you missed out on tickets this time, mark your calendars for next year. The Geek Girls Network puts on one heck of a Geek-Out, and it's the one event we make sure to hit up each year.

Bassment Saturdays Presents: Comic Con After Party - 

Head over to The Studio at Webster Hall at 125 E. 11th St. for a Star Wars themed dance party featuring dubstep, house, moombahton, trap, drum and bass. There will be blacklights, lasers, dancers and drink specials all night! It's FREE for NYCC attendees - make sure you have your badge. You must be 19 to enter and 21 to drink. Goes from 11:00 PM - 4:00 AM.

Sunday, Oct. 14 

The Steampunk Anachronism Meets The Goblin Market - 
"One of New York City's friendliest Steampunk events meets dark interactive theatre, in a show with special guests all the way from Chicago! Just as New York Comic Con ends, The Anachronism begins, and you're most cordially invited - we welcome one and all! The Anachronism showcases genre-bending Steampunk musical artists in a welcoming environment; The Goblin Market's actors mingle with the crowd and sell their eerie wares to all and sundry. In addition to our welcoming atmosphere, unique absinthe cocktails, and good times, we have a half-dozen headlining performers - any one of whom could cost as much as our mere $15 admission (that is, $15 in advance, $20 at door). We try hard to be, not just a spectacular event, but an unbeatable value. NYC Zombie Crawl - 
Help take over NYC by getting gussied up in your zombie best and joining the crawl. Starting at 4:00 PM, head over to Webster Hall (125 E. 11th St.) and get made up by zombie technicians starting at $5 unless you do it yourself,, then just head over for drink specials and pre-game fun. The crawl starts at 6:30 and ends up back at Webster Hall for a fantastic afterparty at 9:00 PM. The afterparty is $14 for zombies/ $16 for normals. Must be 19+ to enter.
