On the first day of NYCC, I attended the World Premiere of Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics. This documentary really looks at the role of the super villain in the telling of a DC story. You can check out the trailer from SDCC this year.
Ultimately, this documentary looks at the value of the villain in a story. The theory that the villain is more important to the story because without the villain, the hero wouldn't exist. Villains represent the protagonist while heroes represent the antagonist. They also discussed the psychological impact of villains.
With a voiceover by Saru....Christopher Lee (his disembodied voice is actually scary), the documentary starts with images of some of our favorite dc villains. Then it quickly goes into the ask and answer format that many documentaries fall into. The speakers in the documentary range from comic creators to tv and movie producers to actors. By far, my favorite was Brian Azzarello. He just had the best quotes and brought lots of laughs to the room.
Two of my favs:
"I understand getting a gun that shoots ice and going into a bank to rob it."
"I think Lex is right about how he thinks. Superman is an alien and we shouldn't trust him."
Lengthwise, this documentary may go on a little too long. Granted, the seats in the Javitz Center aren't all that comfortable. Still, they stayed in the person answering a question format, which can be a bit draining. It might have been nice to add in some real action clips, not just showing it with a voice-over.
Overall, Necessary Evil was an interesting piece to watch. As a DC fan, I liked reveling in the villains I love to hate. I always enjoy hearing how the people behind the characters view the worlds they create. This is also a good thing to watch if you want to write comics since they breakdown how a super villain works.
Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics is available on XBox Marketplace until Oct. 25th, when it officially releases.
