Ghostbusters Key Lime Slime Twinkies Review

For the release of the new Ghostbusters movie, Hostess Twinkies have created a limited edition Key Lime Slime Twinkie. When I saw they were in my grocery store, I had to try them.

As you can see, the Twinkie looks like the normal Twinkie, but you can see a little bit of the green through the cake.

Flip it over, and you can really see the green. To be honest, it doesn't look the most appealing, but it does look fun.

And here you go. The inside of the Key Lime Slime Twinkie. It is a strange blend of neon and pastel green. If I were a kid, I would be scooping the insides out and playing with it or throwing it at people. It just begs to be played with.

But I didn't play with it. Instead I ate the whole thing, and this is where things get a little complicated.

The key lime taste is mild. It doesn't taste like you're sucking a lime, but it is definitely present. Unfortunately, I don't think the key lime flavor goes well with the taste of the Twinkie cream or cake.

It tastes as if the key lime is fighting against the vanilla. They don't blend well. The consistency and mouth feel are uncomfortable. The cream is both creamy and fighting to separate. If anything, they certainly nailed the slimy part of this.

I haven't eaten a regular Twinkie since Hostess filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. It wasn't great, but it was nostalgic and what I expected a Twinkie to be. These key lime ones are neither. I don't know exactly what I expected, but I had hoped for a better product. I can't help but wonder if the Twinkie was made with fresher ingredients it would taste better.

I think kids will get a kick out of these. Adults who love Twinkies will probably enjoy this, and people like me, who are a little more indifferent to Twinkies, will not want to take more than one bite, just so they can say they did.

I'm still searching for the Ecto-Cooler. I have a feeling I'm going to like that a lot more than the Twinkies.
