Review: King Conan #2

Today, Issue #2 of 6 of the Conan series King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon by Dark Horse Comics hits the shelves. This is scripted by Timothy Truman, with art by Tomas Giorello and adapted from the novel of the same name by Conan creator Robert E. Howard.  After reviewing issue #1 of this last month, I was on the fence with this miniseries which compelled me to read on. Will this issue sway me one way or the other? Read on to find out!

As with the first issue, the art is pretty top notch. The book continues to have some interesting visuals representing magic while also having gritty battle scenes (including someone's skull getting smashed, if you're into that kind of thing). The use of colors and shadows gives this story the dire feel to it that the narrative needs to keep you captivated.  

Speaking of the narrative, the story itself in this issue feels better paced. This issue jumps right into the story and keeps on moving. Unlike in the first issue, I didn't feel that any page space was wasted or could have been used more efficiently. This comic is concise and moves quickly.

After reading this issue I can honestly say that I can recommend King Conan #2. This is definitely shaping up to be an interesting story, especially if you're already a Conan fan. If you are unfamiliar with the mythos, there are probably better places to start. However, they do explain enough where if you just wanted to jump in here, you're good to go. Sometimes the best way to get into a new franchise is to just dive in and learn as you go. I wouldn't discourage that with this comic.
