Review: Buzzkill #2

By Reboot

Today, I'm reviewing issue 2 of 4 of Dark Horse Comics' Buzzkill.  This is part of Dark Horse Comics' push for more superhero comics and was created by Donny Cates and Mark Resnicek.  The script itself was written by Donny Cates with art by Geoff Shaw.

For those of you who haven't read issue 1 of Buzzkill (you should read it right now then) here's the premise; a man named Ruben (that's not his real name) starts going to AA meetings again to help him get over his addictions because they give him uncontrollable powers.  Not a feeling of power,  like super strength and super speed.  They make him a super hero.  But with these powers, he's also hurt people he loves and people he's never and will never meet.

Is giving up being a superhero to be a better person selfish?  This has been a theme that pops up in comics again and again over the years.  We've all either read an issue or watched an episode of a series or even saw a movie where a hero decides to hang up his cape, faces a moral dilemma,  and comes back.  In an age of mainstream comics where many of us feel we are constantly reading the same superhero stories over and over again, this one actually takes a concept to a new level that is both refreshing and a page turner.  Donny and Mark really nailed it with this creation.

None of this would be possible without Geoff Shaw's artistic talent.  The majority of his page layouts are complex, visually interesting and push the medium with stylized character designs and sense of depth that make the characters feel like they're jumping off the page.

All elements combined create a comic worth your time and money. Also, it's only four issues.  You should go out and buy issue one if your store still has a copy, and go back on October 16th for issue two.  You will be treated to seeing Ruben (still not his real name) using his powers against a legion of his old villains, old friends returning, and perhaps s friend or foe who isn't too keen on seeing him again.  And hey, if you're going to NYCC, hit up the Dark Horse booth #1636 because the Buzzkill team will be there doing a booth signing and will gladly sign your issue.  Most importantly though, pick up this comic and tell your friends to do the same.
