Sunday Links for May 8

First off, I want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there!

This week, comics stores were on fire, literally when the Green Lantern displays actually burst into flames.  Thankful, no one has been hurt.  I really, really hope that this isn't a warning sign about the upcoming movie.

Yesterday was Free Comic Book Day, where every comic shop welcomes everyone in to experience the wonderful world of comics.  In case you didn't make it (loser), Bleeding Cool organized videos from FCBD around the world!

In the world of gross and possibly way too weird, someone finally came out with Blood perfume.  This is based on the four blood types and while I am slightly interested in smelling this, it worries me.

In the aftermath of the tornados that hit the U.S. a few weeks ago, friends of comic artist Chris Wozniak have organized to raise funds for his family.  His home was completely destroyed and anything that comic fans can do is appreciated.

Thor came out this week.  No link here, just me saying that you should go see it if you haven't.  Chris Hemsworth is pretty and pretty good in the role.

Until next week....

Video Friday! 5/6/11

Hello everyone! I have taken control of Video Friday again. The battle between me and Wilderowens was long and difficult but in the end, I was victorious! Bwuahahahaha! Let us begin.

Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow. It is one of my favorite days because I love getting exposed to new books and it's free! If you are unfamiliar with this awesome day, here's a video talking about why it is so great. Thanks JC for sending it to me.

This is just neat. It's a gorgeous mutation of Batman's logo over the years. Until this, I hadn't realized just how many incarnations the logo had.

This totally made me melt. Most females know that many males are forgetful about things like anniversaries. So it's usually a surprise (a nice one) when the male not only remembers but goes above and beyond and does something heartfelt and wonderfully geeky. I'm probably completely nuts for saying this but I would definitely take this over a box of chocolates any day... and I really love chocolate.

May 4th was Star Wars Day! A day to celebrate all that is Star Wars, good and bad. In my search for Star Wars videos, I came across this video done by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. All I could think was how did I miss it? Enjoy!

Finally, do you know what came out today? Thor! It's finally here and I am super excited for it. It looks like it will be a great film. But you know who has reservations about it? Conan O'Brien. He's a little concerned that the wrong guy was cast as Thor. Here's what he has to say.

There you have it, this week's Video Friday. Remember, if you find something you think should be featured here, send it to insertgeekhere@gmail.com.

Review: Thor #620.1

This week there were two Point One issues. I already covered Captain America, so here is my review of Thor. like I said before, it seems like Marvel is trying to bring in new readers who may be trying to get some more background before the movies come out.

This post is SPOILER-FILLED so if you are allergic to spoilers,
go read another tasty article on [insertgeekhere].

Thor 620.1 starts out hysterically at a feast in honor of Thor. Who would have thought that Norse Gods celebrate with pepperoni pizza?! As they wait for Thor to arrive, they start the celebration with the gods praising Thor for protecting earth and then providing Asgard with a home there. They even have received a gift of a perfect stone statue of Thor. Then someone attacks, turning everyone to stone. OMG! Of course, the statue of Thor is the real Thor, and he unfreezes just in time to save everyone by getting turned into stone again, while he is holding what the bad guy wants.

I have a few complaints about Thor's Point One. This issue read like I was reading a kids' issue. The story seemed overly simplified. I know that this character has got to be more than getting turned to stone to save the day. I also wasn't a fan of how the gods spoke, which I get is how it is for this character. The combo of the simple plotline and the simplistic dialogue just wore me down. Even though I didn't care for the story, I did enjoy the artwork. It was the only thing helping the story move along, plus it provided great background for Thor.

Thor 620.1 felt like a one-shot. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just felt like a step away from the series. However, they did provide a good amount of Thor background, which is what they promised. All in all, this was a good Point One issue for the younger crowd, but I felt like it was a little dull and simple for me. It also didn't excite me for the film; I was hoping it would. Next week, we get a Point One Break, then its April with two Avenger books and Uncanny X-Men!

My Point One Journey so far:

Sunday Links

Wow, has everyone recovered from this past week? As the world changes and history is written right before our eyes, we still had a crazy geek news week to cover.

Big Comic news of the week, Diamond and iVerse are teaming up to sell digital comics in retail, brick-and-mortar comic stores. This sounds like a great and/or horrible idea. The Beat got an exclusive with Diamond's head of digital distribution about how this will work, but iFanboy's Jason Wood still isn't convinced. He raises some great points and I hope Diamond has an ace up their sleeve.

I am sad to report that Activision announced the end of Guitar Hero. *tears This great unit of games just hasn't been pulling in the moolah as of late, and the licensing fees are just crazy. I love Geekologie's coverage of this, and yes, pushing colored buttons does make me feel like a bad ass.

Marvel was all over the press this week. The biggest movie news of the week is the release of 3 Marvel trailers including the Thor, Captain America and X-MEN: First Class trailers. In case you missed it, you should watch them right now. And since this week was crazy Marvel week, they also announced a press conference for Feb. 15 about Moon Knight, their next big thing after their release of the big thing, Fear Itself. I am digging this teaser art for Moon Knight, but can we get through one big event at a time guys? It's hard to keep up with all of this!

There are also plenty of people taking issue with Marvel this week. Ryan at The Weekly Crisis has some good points against Marvel's new plan of killing a major character every quarter to boost sales. Our own WyseFyre also has a bone to pick with Marvel about their PSA comic about suicide.

We put out a call to our geek family this week for supporting The Nerdy Bird's fundraising efforts for the MDA Muscle walk. Go support this great cause right now!

There has been a lot of comic con ticket craziness in the past week, that I am excited to get past. Best con news of the past week? This touching article about TempleCon by Total Fan Girl.

Finally to end our week, a fun mystery from Nerd Approved. Do you see Wolverine or Two Batmans?

If anything comes out that you would like to see highlighted in Sunday Links, email me at insertgeekhere@gmail.com.

Marvel Trailer Time!

This week was a huge Marvel news week. The best part is the great trailers released. In case you missed them, check them out below.

Thor spot looks great. I am not a big Thor fan but this trailer definitely excited me for May!

Still excited for Captain America despite his bobblehead appearance in the beginning of this clip.

This is a great trailer and I can't wait to see what else comes out for X-Men: First Class.
