Gold Comics are Announced for FCBD!

Today they announced the Gold Sponsor comics for Free Comic Book Day.  Yes, Free Comic Book Day isn't for 6 months but I don't care!  I'm excited and cannot wait!!!  

The complete listing of Gold Comics was revealed on The Hollywood Reporter, but only a few really caught my eye.  Just like always, Marvel and DC have books, but they are yet unrevealed in storytelling.  However, these two comics promise to be interesting and unique.

It must be an early holiday gift!!   All fifty FCBD comics are reveled for us to drool over!  Oh, how excited I am for this!  Now, in the off chance you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out this post all about Free Comic Book Day.

Get Ready for Halloween ComicFest!!!

That's right, Halloween ComicFest is tomorrow.  In case you didn't know, comic shops all over are handing out special Halloween issues of comics FOR FREE!  Not every shop is participating though, so check out the ComicFest site to find the closest one to you!  Then, just get ready for some scary reads!

Are you ready for Free Comic Book Day?

That's right, we are about 5 weeks out from one of the bestest days of the year, Free Comic Book Day!  Every first Saturday of May, comic stores all over the country give out free comics to awaiting geeks, in hopes to encourage reading (and spending money) of comics.  Now, if you are a not a comic reader, you should check out Free Comic Book Day at your local comic shop.  If you are a comic reader, still check it out but bring a friend who doesn't read comics.  Spread the comic love!

If I can't convince you, let Thomas Jane convince you.  He knows all about the nutrition value of comics.

Sunday Links for December 11th

We lost a piece of living comic history this week with the passing of Jerry Robinson. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Robinson at MoCCA last year. He was a very nice gentleman who told us what it was like to create all of the iconic characters we love and the behind the scenes juicy gossip. I am so glad that I got that chance, and I will cherish the experience for the rest of my life.

If the Teletubbies weren't bad enough, Fox News has confirmed the The Muppets are anti-corporations. I heard that they are investigating the Scooby gang for socialism.

Diamond Comics released the full list of Free Comic Book Day titles this week. I am especially excited for the Buffy/Guild flipbook and the DC 52 book. I'm disappointed that Marvel is reprinting a bad Avengers comic.

Free Comic Book Titles Have Been Released!

This morning, Diamond Comics released the full list of Free Comic Book Day titles.  Now we have five whole months to sit and dream about the wonder of that magical day!  I can't wait for May 5, 2012!

In case you don't know about Free Comic Book Day, it is a day of Free Comic Books.  I know, right? It's awesome!  It was started by the industry to encourage new and lapsed readers to give comics a chance.  This is a great day to take that friend, sibling or random stranger from the bus stop and go to your local participating comic shop to try some comics!

Just a word of warning though: Your local comic shop doesn't participate for free.  They purchase these books at a reduced rate.  So, don't forget to say please and thank you when you get your free books, and it doesn't hurt to buy something neither...  It's up to us to keep our local businesses thriving!

As you go through this list, if any titles are a must read, please let your LCS know now!  They are ordering these books very soon, so if you wait, you will miss out!

NYCC '11: The Truth about October's FCBD

A lot of news comes out from New York Comic Con. It's hard to keep track of every piece, and no news outlet gets it all at first. Often, we even contradict each other. So, when I get a chance, I always get more details.


I began to see one-liner updates that there would be a new Free Comic Book Day in October. Personally, I think it is a great idea. So great that I went to the Diamond Comics Distributors booth to get more details.


Once I asked, I got a grimaced, aggravated look from the booth staff.  The DCD staffer I spoke with explained that the event was still in planning and nothing was confirmed.


Then, he introduced me to Bill Schanes, the Vice President of Purchasing for Diamond. Bill was the one that made the announcement at the Retailer Breakfast where this all started. He said it went down like this: Bill asked if the retailers would be interested in doing an October FCBD, possibly Halloween themed. A fair number of retailers raised their hands to express interest in taking part. Then he told the room that the day was still in early planning mode. After he left the room, reports came out online stating it was definitely happening and very soon.


Bill has no idea how it ballooned online to definitely happening. The only definite I got is that it will not be as big as the May FCBD.


Please keep in mind, they still want this Halloween FCBD to happen. Diamond Comics does events like this to benefit the retailers and fans. If you want a second FCBD, go to your local comics retailer and tell them you want it! Hopefully, we can show enough support to make this happen next year.

Sunday Links for May 8

First off, I want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there!


This week, comics stores were on fire, literally when the Green Lantern displays actually burst into flames.  Thankful, no one has been hurt.  I really, really hope that this isn't a warning sign about the upcoming movie. 


Yesterday was Free Comic Book Day, where every comic shop welcomes everyone in to experience the wonderful world of comics.  In case you didn't make it (loser), Bleeding Cool organized videos from FCBD around the world!


In the world of gross and possibly way too weird, someone finally came out with Blood perfume.  This is based on the four blood types and while I am slightly interested in smelling this, it worries me.


In the aftermath of the tornados that hit the U.S. a few weeks ago, friends of comic artist Chris Wozniak have organized to raise funds for his family.  His home was completely destroyed and anything that comic fans can do is appreciated. 


Thor came out this week.  No link here, just me saying that you should go see it if you haven't.  Chris Hemsworth is pretty and pretty good in the role.

Video Friday! 5/6/11

Hello everyone! I have taken control of Video Friday again. The battle between me and Wilderowens was long and difficult but in the end, I was victorious! Bwuahahahaha! Let us begin. 


Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow. It is one of my favorite days because I love getting exposed to new books and it's free! If you are unfamiliar with this awesome day, here's a video talking about why it is so great. Thanks JC for sending it to me.





This is just neat. It's a gorgeous mutation of Batman's logo over the years. Until this, I hadn't realized just how many incarnations the logo had.

This totally made me melt. Most females know that many males are forgetful about things like anniversaries. So it's usually a surprise (a nice one) when the male not only remembers but goes above and beyond and does something heartfelt and wonderfully geeky. I'm probably completely nuts for saying this but I would definitely take this over a box of chocolates any day... and I really love chocolate.

May 4th was Star Wars Day! A day to celebrate all that is Star Wars, good and bad. In my search for Star Wars videos, I came across this video done by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. All I could think was how did I miss it? Enjoy!





Finally, do you know what came out today? Thor! It's finally here and I am super excited for it. It looks like it will be a great film. But you know who has reservations about it? Conan O'Brien. He's a little concerned that the wrong guy was cast as Thor. Here's what he has to say.

This past week was filled with sadness as the worst earthquake in their recorded history hit Japan, resulting in a Tsunami felt throughout the entire Pacific. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.

Free Comic Day is fast approaching, and I can say that I am excited. Not just for the free books but because I never know what I will find. Bleeding Cool has previews for all 33 fcbd books for this year.

Stan Lee is cracking up geeks everywhere this week by finally answering the age old question from Mallrats, "What is the Thing's dork made of?" The answer is what we all expected.

If you are a big Scott Pilgrim fan, you will be happy to learn that there are four unreleased songs from the movie. They are from Beck, who did all of the songs for Sex Bob-omb.

Over at Geek to Me, they have a guest editorial from Sean “Blazek” Emes, who makes a very good argument that competitive gaming should be considered a sport. Having suffered from Wii elbow, I can say that gaming can be very, very physically dangerous.

Next time someone tells you that comics are pointless, idiotic reading for kids, make sure to show them this. For Women's History Month, the Smithsonian has created videos and comics to teach kids and adults about some of science's most influential women.
