I Survived SDCC and All I Got Is This Giveaway!

Stellar view from the
convention center
Hi kiddies!  I'm back from my worldwide traveling, which of course included that lovely week in sunny San Diego.  Just a side note, going to San Diego from the humidity-filled hell that is New York City is amazing wonderful.  Like escaping the Rancor only to find yourself in a library stocked with all the books.....and Benedict Cumberbatch is your manservant.  Just mull it over, you'll thank me later.

Iron Man 3 Celebration Giveaway!

Iron Man 3 is out today!!!  Huzzah Huzzah!  With all that excitement in mind, we are giving away a Iron Man 3 prize pack to one lucky reader.

You get a fabulous Iron Man 3 t-shirt (courtesy of Marvel) and a Silver Surfer Bottle Opener (courtesy of Diamond Select Toys).  Why a bottle opener not at all related to IM3?  Two reasons.  One, Tony Stark likes to drink, so obviously bottle opener.  Two, I have too much stuff in my giveaway box.  Also, stop complaining.

Editor's Note: Saw Iron Man 3 and in the first (maybe) ten minutes, you see a character wearing this exact shirt.  If you don't believe me, go see the freaking movie.

You can't buy this awesome shirt in stores.  Ok, maybe eBay.
So enter now!  You may win and have a chance to rock this awesome shirt while you pop open bottles for your friends!

Win an Aching Shoulder from NYCC!

That's right, we have a chance for three of you to win your very own aching shoulder, back and feet! Now, I know you are thinking, "How do you pack all that pain up and ship it to me?" That's a great question!

This is our second annual Con in a Bag giveaway! Since we spent so much time at NYCC, we saved some of the best giveaways for our readers and bagged them up. Three lucky readers will get bags stuffed full of anything that they might possibly get at NYCC. This includes comics, books, buttons, t-shirts and tons of random pieces of paper.
Each one of these is a New York Comic Con Exclusive Item!
Since this was our second year, we had to up the ante. Each bag will have a NYCC show exclusive that you can't get anywhere else! Plus, each bag has an autographed comic! Oooooh fancy!

I actually bruised my shoulder carrying all of this.  That's the mark of a good convention.

Each of our three winners will get two stuffed bags that they can throw on their shoulder, walk around and get the authentic con aching shoulder, back and feet.

We would like to thank some of the companies that made your physical pain possible by providing awesome stuff:

Just go to our Facebook Contest page to enter but hurry! The contest ends on November 11th

Your email address is only used to contact the winner.  We don't send you anything else and we don't sell it.  US residents only since it is really heavy.  We do not guarantee that you will actually get shoulder pain and we are also not responsible if you do get any pain or injury from these bags.  Contest ends November 11th.

Road to NYCC '11: Con Quest '11

This past weekend, the IGH team got to be sneaky, really sneaky.  Like Charlie the Unicorn sneaky.

Yeah, they are really tired of me repeating this scene over and over and over....

We were hiding prize envelopes for Con Quest '11.  In case you don't know, Con Quest is a multi-state scavenger hunt for New York Comic Con tickets.  Over parts of the east coast, dedicated geeks hid tickets to NYCC, who tweeted the clues.  We broke up into teams to cover NYC en masse.  The IGH team tweeted as Team We Go Hard!  This is now our team name for all group activities, even if a name isn't required.

This year, our team split up and hid prizes in multiple parts of the New York area.  Getsuyobi and I teamed up to hide an early morning prize on Long Island before heading into NYC.  Check out what the prize looks like:

I'm hiding....

Wysefyre hid one of the prizes in Queens at the Hall of Science.  After heading into the city, the rest of the team headed down to Coney Island to drop of a clue by Nathan's Famous.  After touching the bottom of a very gross phone booth, we headed to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, where we got to see some lucky guys find the prize we hid!

Then we moved on to the best prize location ever, The Way Station.  For you non-NYers, The Way Station is the ultimate geek bar, including a Tardis bathroom.  In case you haven't been there, you should go.  We were supposed to hide the prize in the bathroom but the clue accidentally went out early and this lucky, speedy fan beat us there!

Congrats!!!!

We closed out the night with a drink at the bar and a visit to the "Tardis" before the long ride home.  This was a lot of fun and a great way to get excited for New York Comic Con!  Thank a lot to the great NYCC team, lead by the awesome @henchling, for holding such a great event!

In case you still need a ticket for NYCC '11, check out our NYCC ticket giveaway!  Enter now!

And our Giveaway just got better!

So, we announced last week that we are giving away a 3-day pass to New York Comic Con. That's an awesome prize and a lot of you have already entered.

But then, one of our friends and followers @MisterJackal  (he is awesome!) decided to make our Anniversary Giveaway twice as good.  That's right, we are now giving two winners each a 3-day pass to New York Comic Con.

To let the awesomeness of this wash over you, we are also extending the contest until this Friday, Sept. 23 at midnight.

So, go now and enter! Then tell your friends. Then tell your family, co-workers, the guy at the deli and the person next to you on the bus.

Sorry but Travel and Lodging are not included.  Just the 3-day ticket.  One per winner.  US residents only so it gets to them on time.  Contest ends September 23th.

Sunday Links for September 18

Another week of fun and flights of fancy!  Here are the highlights...

They caught the sleazebag that stole part of a Superman collection from Mike Meyer.  Meyer has gotten his collection back but since this story has broken, his collection has doubled.  He plans on donating the items he has received in order to spread the wealth.  Mr. Meyer, we salute you!
(via Robot 6)

Fox announced that they are developing a pilot for the DC character The Spectre.  I'm not feeling too hopeful, especially since they canceled their last comic property.
(via Comic Book Resources)

With all of the fall premieres starting up, I wrote a plea to TV executives everywhere to not cancel shows too quickly.  Hopefully someone heard me but I'm doubtful....
(via [insertgeekhere])

The DC 52 isn't just reworking storylines, they seem to be reworking their staff too.  This week marked the resignation of John Rozum from Static Shock.

Have you gotten your NYCC pass yet?  No, you didn't?  Then head on over and enter our giveaway for one asap!  Only 2 days left!

Until next week.....

Win a Copy of Lost at the Con!

Welcome to [insertgeekhere]’s New York Comic Con countdown!

With NYCC a mere two months away, we felt now would be the time to start whipping up everyone into a con frenzy as we get ready for our main event of the year. To kick things off, we are giving away a copy of Lost at the Con.

Written by award winning filmmaker, columnist, author, editor (is there anything he does not do?) Bryan Young, Lost at the Con tells the story of Cobb, an alcoholic political journalist, who is forced to take an assignment at the sci-fi/fantasy convention, Griffin*Con.

With references to Star Trek, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and many more, anyone reading this will have a great time figuring out what or who Cobb is talking about as he dives into the world of geekdom.

From cosplay to slash fiction to paying exorbitant amounts of money for autographs and pictures, Cobb spends his time trying to figure out what makes the attendees tick while he is also going through some intense personal issues and questioning his own life.

Young’s writing is direct and keeps a quick pace. The book is funny and smart and thought provoking. That is why it is the perfect book for geeks and non-geeks alike. So follow Cobb on his wild ride and enter now!

To enter, like our Facebook page and fill out the entry form. A winner will be selected on August 29th.

Expect the next 8 weeks to be filled with giveaways, advice, maps, and other fun-filled con related goodies.

Our First Giveaway ended with a Guest Judge!!

We had our first giveaway for a snazzy copy of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, signed by the great Rick Riordan.  For this giveaway, we assigned each entry a number and had our guest judge pick.  Our guest judge was none other that one of the most hated men in Buffy Fandom, @Bitsyrant of BuffyFest!  Yes, we know that he isn't quite the most hated but he is getting pretty close.  He is waiting for some Hate Fan Fic about him, so if you are bored.....

Our first winner is...... @Hakkaiduo!!  We do know that she is excited and had this to say
"*Flails* OMG yay!!!" and "I won an Autographed Percy Jackson Book!! Eeeee!!!! *flails* thank you"

All of us are happy that she is so excited and hope that she didn't injure herself with all of that flailing. ;)

We have some good stuff in the works so keep watching for more awesome giveaways!

Rick Riordan Came to My Town and I Got Prezzies!

Rick Riordan gave a lecture this past weekend at Adelphi University.  Mr. Riordan is the genius behind the Percy Jackson series, the Kane Chronicles, the 39 Clues and the Tres Navarre series.  He shared a lot of interesting facts about his books and even gave us some spoilers for his upcoming book The Lost Hero.  But first, some fun facts!

I suck at getting non blurry pictures so this was the best

Fun Facts about Rick Riordan

- He created Percy Jackson to help his son study.  His son, like Percy, is dyslexic and has ADHD so this was a great way to teach him about Greek myths.  His son was even the one to encourage him to publish it.

- His own students were the first people to edit Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief.

- When he first sent Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief to publishers, he signed it as "Ransom Reese."

- His favorite Percy Jackson book is The Last Olympian.

- The big battle scene at the end of The Last Olympian was inspired by The Iliad.

- The House of Life from The Red Pyramid actually existed and was the inspiration for the Kane Chronicles.

- If he was a god, he would like to be Poseidon or Hermes but figures he would end up being Dionysus.

Found on Wikipedia

SPOILER ALERT

We got to hear a never-before read passage of The Lost Hero. You can already read the first two chapters here.  I will admit, I took crappy notes when he read this chapter.  I don't really like giving away too much, plus I was mesmerized with what I heard.

I can tell you a few things about the scene we heard.  Piper, a new character, was getting her camp tour from Annabeth.  Piper senses something is off when they walk past Hera's cabin.  When they go inside, they find a giant statue of Hera and....Rachel Elizabeth Dare.  While the three of them are talking, we learn that not only is Percy missing but the Gods themselves have stopped communicating with the world.  As this conversation continues, Rachel goes into a trance and grabs Piper.  She says in a dark tone "Free Me...."

SPOILER ALERT OVER

And then there was some more, but I didn't write it down.  But don't worry, The Lost Hero comes out on October 12!

And now for what you have been scrolling for.....Prezzies!

After the lecture, there was a book signing.  I have a copy of Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief autographed by the man himself, Rick Riordan.  I had to brave a hoard of pre-teens to get this, so I hope you treasure it!  In order to win this, you have to go to twitter, follow us at @IGHInsider and retweet about this giveaway.  We will use a randomizer to pick the winner on October 7th.
