NYCC '11: Sunday wraps it up!

New York Comic Con is done and we are still standing....sorta. I know it's bad when random people tell you how exhausted you look. I may look tired but I feel great. This was a really fun con, with so many awesome panels, companies and people!

Here are our highlights from today:

- At the DC Meet the Publishers panel, I finally heard someone from DC confirm that the mystery woman hidden in the issues will have a storyline coming. It was so awesome to listen to Dan Didio and Jim Lee talk DC.

- Getsuyobi went to the Jim Henson panel, where he learned about 3 upcoming books that sound amazing.

- Wysefyre went to the Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark panel, with a surprise attendee Dan Slott.

- All of us attended a Marvel panel over the weekend and agree that Arune Singh is the best moderator ever. 

- Huge deals and freebies were on the floor today. Wysefyre got some amazing prints from Jon Hughes and Marc Wolfe, while I got a ton of free comics! I also got the best show exclusive......

  

It was a fantastic con and if you attended, I hope you had a blast.  I know I met so many new geeks that became fast friends.  If we talked, please leave a note on the blog and stay in touch!

My first thoughts on Justice League #1

Well, the fated day is here. Justice League has arrived, kicking off the DCnU. Despite all of my worries, I was strangely excited to read this issue. Something so familiar yet so unfamiliar all wrapped up in a shiny cover.  In case, you didn't know, the DCnU and this issue are the brainchild of Jim Lee, the artist, and Geoff Johns, the writer.


I don't think I really gave any spoilers but if you are spoiler-sensitive, you may want to bookmark this page and read it after you read Justice League.  


In this first issue, they show how the JLA starts at the very beginning. We get small doses of a few of the Justice League members but not everyone shows up.  They don't even get along or want to play together.  One character even tells another, "this is my turf, go back to yours." 


In the DCnU, everything is brand-new and that includes superheroes. The public doesn't know what to make of them! As the book goes on, I'm excited to see how they work public opinion into the story.


As the art goes, I like it but it is a style that will take a while to get used to. Everyone seems to have the same chiseled jaw. It started to bug me out. To me, the characters still read the same, but the look is definitely different.


I loved the premise of this first issue so much. I even wrote a quick "movie trailer guy" speech. Just imagine him saying it in that deep, deep voice.


"In a world that doesn't understand what a superhero is, masked vigilantes start to appear. These mysterious individuals seem to have extraordinary abilities that no human can possess. They are each alone on the planet, never knowing others like them, until today....."


I know, I'm cheesy.  ;)


One thing I almost missed is the final DC Nation column. It is being revamped as the DC All Access column to fit the new Universe. I don't really see this making a big impact, unless they add more extras, which I doubt. Still, it's a good thing to know.


So, how did you like Justice League #1? Hopefully, it made you hungry for more, because it looks like the DCnU is here to stay!


Side note: How long are we going to call it the DC New Universe? When does it just go back to being the DCU?

Sunday Links for July 31

The big scandal of the week is DC Comics' lack of female creators in the New 52. It came down to a lot of angry fans that DC's Co-Publisher Dan Didio just snapped back at a crowd. Artist Rebekah Isaacs came out with her opinion about the situation, and defended DC. Comics Alliance has a response to Didio's actions but then Didio and Jim Lee came out and said they want and will employ more females in the future.

Sit down and brace yourself: Kick-Ass 2 will be coming out on a regular schedule! Maybe Millar and Romita read my rant about it. In the end, I'll believe it when it's in my hands.

Marvel has restarted their Comics for Comics program. If retailers send in DC Flashpoint covers, they get a sweet looking Marvel variant. I kinda feel bad for those poor Flashpoints.

After this week of quoting the insanities of Charlie Sheen, let's take a look back and see what else we missed....


The big movie news of the week was the release of a very creepy looking Red Skull from the new Captain America movie. Love the look and I am totally getting more excited by the day! In DC movie news, there is a rumor floating that Aragorn himself, Viggo Mortensen, is up for the role of General Zod in the new Superman flick. You all know how excited I am for Superman, and I would love to see Mortensen be the baddie.


CBLDF announced this week, in conjunction with Cryptozoic Entertainment, their new trading card series called The Liberty Trading Cards. The set will include sketch cards, chase cards and autographs, along with more than 70 of today’s top creators. I guess the new trend for geeks is trading cards, after the Geek A Week cards went on sale last month. CBLDF is also fundraising with 100 Words, a poem about death written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Jim Lee. The poem can be purchased for $0.99 in the DC Comics app from comiXology, with all of DC's proceeds going to the Comic Book Legal Defense fund.

This past Wednesday was the 25th Anniversary of She-Ra, the pinnacle female from the MotU shows. As someone who grew up telling people that I was the Princess of Power, among other things, I am excited to see that She-Ra lives on in the memories of others, inspiring many as she inspired me.


If you head over to Google today, you will see a tribute to Will Eisner. Today would have been his 94th birthday, and it kicks off Will Eisner Week. MoCCA in NYC is starting a Will Eisner exhibit this week, along with the “In the Spirit of Will Eisner” show with Eisner-influenced pieces. There are events happening all over the world, so check Will Eisner Week to see if it is happening in your area.


This one really gets to me. MTV Geek puts out a list of the 10 Best Post-Apocalyptic Comics and Resurrection isn't on it?! I mean, some of these are great series but Resurrection is just a superb alien apocalypse tale. Go read it.


Whew, we made it through without a single Sheen reference....oh wait. I just gotta post this! Comics Alliance has paired Charlie Sheen quotes with superheroes, and it is just too perfect. Enjoy or weep. Your choice.
