2016 Comic Reading Challenge!

Here I was, perusing Facebook as I like to do, when I stumbled upon a page promoting a 2016 Reading Challenge.  The monthly list of book requirements caught my eye.  I love the guidelines for book options, and frankly think it would be a great graphic novel reading challenge.

While I probably don't need to add more reading to my to-do list, I can't help myself.  The best part is I'm bringing you all with me!

Sunday Links for July 31

The big scandal of the week is DC Comics' lack of female creators in the New 52. It came down to a lot of angry fans that DC's Co-Publisher Dan Didio just snapped back at a crowd. Artist Rebekah Isaacs came out with her opinion about the situation, and defended DC. Comics Alliance has a response to Didio's actions but then Didio and Jim Lee came out and said they want and will employ more females in the future.

Sit down and brace yourself: Kick-Ass 2 will be coming out on a regular schedule! Maybe Millar and Romita read my rant about it. In the end, I'll believe it when it's in my hands.

Marvel has restarted their Comics for Comics program. If retailers send in DC Flashpoint covers, they get a sweet looking Marvel variant. I kinda feel bad for those poor Flashpoints.

Review: Kick-Ass 2 #2

So, after six months of endless waiting, the second issue of Kick-Ass 2 has arrived! I have to say it, waiting sucks and if I have to wait six months for every issue, I'm gonna be pissed. Mr. Millar, in every issue you print, you list loyal comic book shops and talk about how grateful you are for their support. How about some gratitude to the loyal readers?! I'm still waiting on new issues of Superior too! C'mon, just give me issues close enough together so I don't forget completely about what's going on!

Kick-Ass 2 #2 continues to gives us insight into the superhero group that Dave wants to join. He even knows one of the members from his high school. The organizers are former mafia and they pick the group's first target, a mafia leader. They have a decent fight scene and the book ends with the leader, Colonel Stripes, saying to the mafia guy, "We have to talk".


We get very little info about Hit-Girl, only learning that she is still banned from seeing Dave. We also hear about Red Mist and the army he is building to destroy the city.


This issue felt kind of slow story-wise. There is a lot of building towards a big climax but the fight scene at the end just doesn't do it for me. I do realize that the story is developing for issues down the road, and I am excited to see where it leads. Despite my feelings of the story, I loved the art. Romita really hit it out of the park, especially during the fight scene. I also like all of the cheesy details he brought to the other group members. It seems realistic that they would look cheesy to play superheroes.


I would recommend this issue if you are already a Kick-Ass fan. If not, you may want to wait for another six months and see what I say about issue 3.

Review: Kick-Ass 2

Out this (past) week (yeah, I know its late, but RL sucks) is one of the biggest releases of the year (for me at least), Kick-Ass 2. We get another glimpse into the world of Kick-Ass and Hitgirl as they fight crime and get through school and life as blossoming superheroes.

Since we left our heroes, Hitgirl has moved back in with her mom and stepdad, Marcus (who you might recognize from the movie. He was in the first series, in the background, for one panel). She is really trying to be...normal...? Kick-Ass is moving up the superhero ranks as he trains to be the hero he is inside. The story starts off fast with Kick-Ass walking the beat and builds up a lot of loose threads that will (hopefully!) be explained soon. With a new superhero team possibly forming and Hitgirl giving up the life, I am truly exciting to see what happens to Kick-Ass as he continues his journey under the mask.

Mark Millar has set the standard again and I am so glad he did. You can really see that he enjoys writing these characters and I do wonder if some of the wisecracks represent his true feelings. The art is spot on, thanks to John Romita, Jr. He brings back the style that worked in the first series. The way the story looks to be going, we are going to get to see some great fight scenes and I am sure he will highlight every blow.

I need to admit, I have loved this story from the very beginning. Growing up, I was Dave, in my way, wanting to grab a mask and make my mark on the world. Very few people have that dedication but we all wish we did. While yes, it would probably be a stupid and dangerous thing to do, it would be memorable.

Check out this series, 'cause it will rock your world and make you want to buy that mask. Just get some combat training first. The first issue is out now so make sure you grab a copy. If you haven't read the first series, make sure you pick it up!
