Toy Review: Captain Phasma & Finn LEGO Brickheadz

As a palate cleanser from the Rick and Morty debacle, Matthew from NerdNewsToday and I decided to have some fun and put together a couple of LEGO Brickheadz. Captain Phasma and Finn are part of the Star Wars collection of Brickheadz. Rey and Kylo Ren complete the set of four.

We filmed this immediately after completing the Rick and Morty set, and to be completely honest, I was still a bit wrecked from that, but I love these Brickheadz. I find them weirdly therapeutic, and because of that, my collection keeps growing. Check out the video and see what I'm talking about.

Toy Review: Playmobil "Ghostbusters 2" Peter Venkman Figure

As you know, Playmobil launched a Ghostbusters line of playsets, which Matthew from NerdNewsToday and I reviewed. You can find those here, here, here, here, here, and here. Well, Playmobil is back with more. This time, it's Ghostbusters 2, and we are reviewing Peter Venkman.

Unboxed: FanSets Harry Potter Blind Bag Pins Series 1

Matthew at NerdNewsToday and I are back with a review we have both been waiting to do. Today, we're going to be unboxing (unbagging?) the Target Exclusives Harry Potter Collectors Pins from FanSets.

A relatively young company, FanSets has exploded in the pin markets. They have an extensive collection of pins ranging from Justice League to Firefly to Harry Potter and to the franchise that really helped them cement their spot as the go-to place for awesome pins, Star Trek.

One of the things I love about them is their creativity. They don't just put out great products; they're really creative in their designs and execution. Like this for example. I never would have expected to see a blind bag collection for pins, but it works. It actually took me a while to find them. For weeks, every Target I went to was sold out. I got lucky. Take a look at the collection and let me know what you think.

Unboxed: Num Noms Series 4

This video review is a particular favorite of mine. Mostly because Matthew from NerdNewsToday had never really been initiated into the world of Num Noms, and I think they're adorable. I kind of wish they had been around when I was growing up, because I loved toy makeup products, and I would have collected all of these.

Unboxed: "Doctor Who" 10th Doctor Collection Titans Vinyl

I told you we'd be back with more Titans.

This time, Matthew from NerdNewsToday and I are taking a look at The Doctor Who 10th Doctor Collection.I'm always excited when we unbox Titans, but as a Whovian, the Doctor Who lines are always a little extra special to me. Grab your sonic screwdriver and watch on!

Toy Review: Playmobil Ghostbusters Firehouse Review

And now, for the pièce de résistance of our Playmobil Ghostbusters line reviews, Matthew at NerdNewsToday and I bring you the Ghostbusters Firehouse. This was an experience. I don't know about you, but while Slimer was my favorite to review, this was what I was really waiting for. I love the Firehouse and all its inner workings. Lego came out with their version, and I'd love to get it, but I can't due to the cost. The Playmobil Firehouse, on the other hand, is much more affordable, as well as the rest of the line. You will not destroy your wallet investing in these. Anyway, on to the grand finale!

As always, if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please comment below. Until next time!

Toy Review: Playmobil Slimer Ghostbusters Playset

We are finally up to the playset I was most excited to review, featuring the ghostest with the mostest, the gooeier, most hungry, most fun spectral being - SLIMER! Now you might think it was the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that was my favorite, but I love me some Slimer, and Matthew over at Nerd News Today definitely had to pry him out on my hands. Apparently I enjoy boogery looking ghosts. Who knew? But how's the set stack up? Find out below.

Oh my goodness! I cannot tell you how excited I am about this! Playmobil released a line of toys dedicated to the Ghostbusters franchise, and if you're a fan, you are going to want to take a look.

Matthew from NerdNewsToday and I got our hands on the entire line, and we went to town!

But is the line worth getting? Watch on!

K'Nex Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare Mystery Figures Series 4 Unboxed

Plants vs. Zombies is one of those games I wish I spent more time with, but I get a little overzealous with games, so I try not to play too many of them. At least not the ones I know I can get obsessive over. PvZ is one of those games. I also really like the comics. They amuse me, so when Matthew at NerdNewsToday wanted to review the Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare Mystery Figures Series 4 from K'Nex, I was all in. Watch and enjoy the silly faces I make as we review them.

Titans Vinyl Buffy the Vampire Slayer Unboxed

This time, Matthew from NerdNewsToday and I took a look at the Titans Vinyl Buffy the Vampire Slayer set. This was the set I was most excited about for our first round of Titans reviews (yes, there will be more, we love Titans). I don't want to give to much away, but this box gave me a bunch of feelings.

[IGH] Book Review: Trashed

By Reboot

Hey again! Hope you've all been well.  I recently read Trashed by John "Derf" Backderf to review for you all. Already being a big fan of another graphic novel of his, My Friend Dahmer, this was not much of a chore for me to read. And I don't think it will be for you either.

If you haven't already read My Friend Dahmer, I suggest you stop reading this review right now, go get yourself a copy, read it, then come back to this. It is easily one of the most fascinating autobiographical graphic novels out there. If you are unfamiliar, it's about how Derf was friends with Jeffrey Dahmer (yes, THAT Jeffrey Dahmer) in high school and examines Dahmer from his own perspective. This is a unique blend of slice of life meets page turning suspense just in the knowledge of knowing what will eventually happen.

We had the opportunity to catch an early pilot screening of Fox's new cop drama, Almost Human.  Produced by J.J. Abram's Bad Robot, it is starring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy as futuristic buddy cops and premieres tonight.

Reboot and Wilderowens share their non-spoilery reviews after the break.

[IGH] at the Movies: Man of Steel

This week marks the return of the first superhero to the big screen in Man of Steel.  Three of the [IGH] family got a chance to see it right before it opened and you know we all had different feelings.

[IGH] at the Movies: Star Trek Into Darkness

This past Wednesday, five contributors to [IGH] set off on a mission, to boldly go and see the new movie, Star Trek Into Darkness.  Not surprisingly, we all had various opinions of this much-expected film.  So we have brought you a MEGA REVIEW filled with a variety of opinions!  If you have seen the film, share your thoughts in the comments too!

MisterJackal's Review
Much like the previous film, the performances in Star Trek Into Darkness were all great! The relationship between Kirk and Spock was absolutely perfect. Their constant back and forth brings a natural progression to the relationship you were introduced to in the first one. The rest of the crew did a great job sticking with their Captain. But my hat goes off to Benedict Cumberbatch. He did a phenomenal job! OMG, he was good. I was a little skeptical to see what he was going to do in this but he was absolutely spectacular as the villain. He brings a huge menacing presence that absolutely over shadows everyone that is in the scene with him.  Besides it being a full of great performances; it is beautifully shot. At no moment in this film do you feel that you are watching a regular movie that is filled with CGI. There are some scenes that you are engulfed into the environment and you feel like you are on a strange planet.  The story is really well put together and does a great job providing fan service. Even though this film is part of a franchise that has been around for years, people with no knowledge of the previous films can enjoy this. There is one moment in particular that had me in tears. Not only because of the fan service but because of the connection I had with the character.  I absolutely love this film and I can't wait to watch this a third time!

Review: Side Effects

Last week, Mister Jackal of InnerCity Geeks and I got a chance to attend an early screening of Side Effects. No wait, not an early screening, it was the frelling NYC premiere! Any night where the movie gets a live introduction from Steven Soderbergh is pretty awesome.

Here are our takes on Side Effects.

[IGH] Tackles TV: The Doctor Returns

As I mentioned in earlier post, I recently became a Whovian, so it would be silly of me not to talk about the newest episodes of Doctor Who.

We're three episodes in to season seven, and already it's been a bumpy ride.

*Warning: Mild Spoilers (Nothing that hasn't already been announced)

Ep1 Asylum of the Daleks

What a way to start the season. I've watched it four times. It gives us a quick glimpse into the lives of Rory Williams and Amy Pond without the Doctor, and then throws us right into the crazy. It also introduces us to Oswin. I can't talk too much about her because that would give away too much, but she is amazing. She's like a female version of the Doctor, but human. She's who I imagine a child between the Doctor and Amy would turn out to be. Sassy, funny, brilliant, emotional, and wonderful. But if Amy and the Doctor had a kid, it would be a little too weird and complicated even for the Whoniverse. She's played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, who is slated to play the Doctor's next companion. How that is going to work out I have no idea, but I'm sure it will be good.

Ep2 Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

I wanted so much more from this episode. It has dinosaurs, a spaceship, Queen Nefertiti, Finch (David Bradley) and Arthur Weasley (Mark Williams) as Rory's dad. This screams storytelling gold, but unfortunately, it fell flat. The characters were underutilized or used poorly, and the story lacked substance. I don't need all of my stories to be deep and poignant like "A Good Man Goes to War" or "Vincent and the Doctor", but give me something like "Let's Kill Hitler." There was so much more they could have done with this. There were a few really great moments. I enjoyed meeting Rory's dad, Brian Williams, and seeing the interaction between the two of them, and there's a wonderful moment at the end with Brian looking at Earth that is just so touching. It's exactly what I would want to do if I ever had the chance to go to space (a gal can dream.)

Ep3 A Town Called Mercy

And we are back. This is a much stronger episode than Ep2. The tone of the episode is interesting. You'd think with the setting being the Wild West there'd be more humor, but no. There was more humor in Asylum of the Daleks than this. There's a darkness to the story. You get to see more glimpses as to why the Doctor should not travel alone. It's reminiscent of the 10th Doctor in "The Water of Mars." There's also an ambiguity to the story that I would love to see explored more in different episodes. Does someone's good deeds cancel out their bad ones? That said, I think the best part of the episode is Susan. You'll know it when you see it.

My biggest complaint about these episodes is the underutilization of the Ponds. It's established that they are not traveling with the Doctor as much as they used to, but when they are there, they feel like bit characters. The emotional vein is there. You can see how much everyone cares about each other, but let them talk and do stuff. Also, I miss River Song. I want more River.

I really like how they are setting up the Ponds' leaving. I know it will have a fantastic Whovian twist, but right now it's about growing up and growing apart. Everyone can relate to that.

I can't tell if the next couple of episodes are the ones that will really set the tone for the season, or if they will just be a conclusion to a wonderful ride with these companions. Either way, I'm confident that we're in for a ride.

[IGH] at the Movies: Men In Black III

We got a chance to check out the next chapter of the MIB franchise, Men In Black III.  Was it a worthy sequel for us?  Let's see what we both thought....

Wilderowens' review

The MIB films have been filled with a fun and whimsical feeling. However, I went into this film with an impending sense of dread. With sequel after sequel scrambling for a few bucks, I was afraid to see this. Plus, the time travel storyline has been done so many times.  I was wrong to be worried though. Sonnenfeld did manage to keep this franchise fun and whimsical throughout. He handled the time travel gracefully and had plenty of funny one liners to keep the audience entertained.

[IGH] on Books: OPERATION: Montauk by Bryan Young

Have you ever read a book that not only captured your attention but took such a hold on you that you felt physically compelled to read it? That's how I felt reading OPERATION: Montauk by Bryan Young.

Rather than attempt to try and summarize the story, I think I'll let the author himself provide the synopsis:

The Muppets Review

“It's time to play the music."
The Muppets are here, and they’ve arrived in style!

I love the Muppets. My childhood is filled with Muppet-y good memories. The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, Muppet Babies, and the movies – I watched them all, repeatedly. I always wanted to reenact the scene with Miss Piggy and Joan Rivers in the department store in Muppets Take Manhattan. It just looked like sooooo much fun!

When I first heard about this movie, I was really worried. I remember Space Jam, and what it did for Looney Tunes (not much). I didn’t want that to happen to my beloved characters. I started to feel a little bit better when I heard how much of a “Muppet enthusiast” Jason Segel was, but still weary. So, when I got the opportunity to go to an advanced screening of The Muppets this past weekend, I couldn’t turn it down. If it was great then I got early viewing bragging rights and if it sucked, I got a free movie.

I am happy to report it did NOT suck. In fact, it left me wanting more!

Mild Spoilers Ahead!!!
