NYCC '13 Day Three Recap

NYCC is one of my favorite times of the year, but I am not a fan of Saturdays. All the coolest stuff happens on Saturday because that's when all the working people can come. It makes sense, but it also makes for a very crowded con. So, instead of walking the floor like I had been doing the past few days, I decided to make Saturday my panels day.

My day started with the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary panel, which was filled with writers, podcasters, and comic book artists discussing all things Who. It was a great panel, but it wouldn't be a Doctor Who panel without a Doctor. The 6th Doctor himself, Colin Baker crashed the panel, along with Big Finish Productions chairman and co-executive, Jason Haight-Ellery, and the man you never want to hear say, "EXTERMINATE," Nicholas Briggs.

Next, I ran to the J. Michael Straczynski panel, only to remember a couple minutes later that I needed to be on the other side of the Javits, trying to get into the Once Upon a Time panel. I left Mr. Straczynski in the middle of an interesting conversation with a fan about radioactive residue in Canada to hurry over to the Empire Stage. I went into the Marvel Video Games, got the scoop on what's coming up, got to geek out over the new stuff coming to Marvel Avengers Alliance and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, then settled in for the Once Upon a Time panel.

The Once Upon a Time Panel wasn't the most exciting panel I went to that day, but it was extremely informative and a good time was had by all. We got to see the first act of this week's episodes of Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time: Wonderland, and we were treated to a surprise guest - Jennifer Morrison.

NYCC '13: Chat with Georges Jeanty about the Whedonverse

At New York Comic Con, I got a chance to chat briefly with Whedonverse artist Georges Jeanty. And I mean briefly chat. It was exactly 4 min 50 seconds. I timed it. He did confirm some details for me about the upcoming Serenity comics. I also quickly questioned him about any upcoming involvement with Buffy.

Ok, I bulleted all the details for a quick read. Just remember,

This post is SPOILER-FILLED so if you are allergic to spoilers, go read another tasty article on [insertgeekhere].

NYCC '13: Day Two Recap

Day Two of New York Comic Con always feels like a real con day because it's a totally full convention center. The crowds are double the volume and double the headache.

I opted to skip the people troughs this morning and arrived just before 11. First stop was checking out the latest offering from Mega Bloks. Their new Call of Duty items look fantastic! Then I went on a freebie hunt for a bit, snagging a lot including special collector's item for our bags! I also ran the gauntlet of autographs at Dark Horse comics. I got to chat briefly with Mike Norton and Dennis Hopeless (The Answer!), Bryan J. L. Glass (Furious), Donny Cates (Buzzkill and Hunter Quaid), and Eliot Rahal (Hunter Quaid).

My favorite was sitting down to interview Vivek J. Tiwary and Andrew C. Robinson about their upcoming book The Fifth Beatle. These two guys are great and having read it, I know they have created something amazing.

NYCC '13: Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics

On the first day of NYCC, I attended the World Premiere of Necessary Evil: Super Villains of DC Comics. This documentary really looks at the role of the super villain in the telling of a DC story.  You can check out the trailer from SDCC this year.

Ultimately, this documentary looks at the value of the villain in a story. The theory that the villain is more important to the story because without the villain, the hero wouldn't exist. Villains represent the protagonist while heroes represent the antagonist. They also discussed the psychological impact of villains.

NYCC '13 Day 1 Recap

Yesterday, New York Comic Con '13 kicked off. This year, they're doing things a little different. Con attendees have to go through a security checkpoint and get their badges checked in. I wasn't sure if it would cause problems for people trying to get in, but at the time we arrived, it seemed to be working. This was created to help cut down people trying to use counterfeit passes, and it made things feel a little more organized, which is always nice.

Wilderowens and I started the day in the queue line. Haven't had that experience in a while, and it was a good reminder as to what it feels like to be jam packed with a bunch of people who are all excited to go to the same place as you. Some of the costumes I saw on line were amazing. I just wish I could have gotten some pictures, but everyone was moving too fast, and I'm too short to get good overhead shots.

Review: Buzzkill #2

By Reboot

Today, I'm reviewing issue 2 of 4 of Dark Horse Comics' Buzzkill.  This is part of Dark Horse Comics' push for more superhero comics and was created by Donny Cates and Mark Resnicek.  The script itself was written by Donny Cates with art by Geoff Shaw.

For those of you who haven't read issue 1 of Buzzkill (you should read it right now then) here's the premise; a man named Ruben (that's not his real name) starts going to AA meetings again to help him get over his addictions because they give him uncontrollable powers.  Not a feeling of power,  like super strength and super speed.  They make him a super hero.  But with these powers, he's also hurt people he loves and people he's never and will never meet.

My Fav NYCC Promotions for 2013!

Every year before NYCC, I get slammed with a ton of emails from different companies promoting their booth.  Honestly, it is a disturbing amount.  Still, it is always nice to see what people are going to be there or what free item they are giving away.

This year, a few promotions really stood out as my must-have favorites.

ComiXology's Limited Edition Art Cards
Booth #1928

Yes, I know almost every comic company booth offers art cards as a freebie to get signed.  Still, when they are limited to 100 and this pretty looking, I'm thinking yay!  There are more than I have shown and you can check out the signing schedule for details.

Harper Voyager Digital Book Signing
Booth #2118-2119

Yep, you read that right.  They are giving away signed e-books.  I have no idea how this is going to work but I am super curious.  The books they are giving away are signed e-books by C. Robert Cargill, Alison Gaylin, Richard Kadrey, Adam Mansbach, Wendy Corsi Staub, and David Wellington.  The event is Friday Oct. 11 at 6pm and is definitely one of the most unique events this year at NYCC.

Christopher Jones Art Disco Nightwing Print
Artist Alley Booth #D9

Ok, full confession: I didn't get an official email about this one but it is still one of the best things at NYCC so I'm adding it.  Christopher Jones is an awesome artist, who is currently on DC's Young Justice.  Even if you aren't a fan, you have gotta appreciate the awesomeness of this print.  All you need to do to get it is like him on FB, so the price is right too.  Get there early to make sure you get one!

If you think I've overlooked this amazing promotion that must be shared with the masses, tell me at insertgeekhere (AT) gmail (DOT) com.  Also, make sure to check out our NYCC Party List so you know where all the best stuff is happening after the con floor closes!  See you on the floor tomorrow!

Review: The Other Dead #1

By Reboot

Today, I review the first installment of IDW's The Other Dead. This comic is brought to you by co-creator's comic's veteran Joshua Ortega and Art Asylum co-founder Digger T. Mesch, with art by Qing Ping Mui, colors by Blond, and with creative consulting by indie comics legend Kevin Eastman. Additionally, this comic is based on a film treatment by Digger T. Mesch.

The premise of The Other Dead is that something is causing dead animals to be reanimated in Southern Louisiana. We see these events unfolding primarily around one dysfunctional family. I don't want to give away any hints the story gives as to why they're coming back, but it does have some subtleties to it so keep your eyes peeled!

Why I'm Supporting the Dredd Sequel Fan Campaign

So yes, I've joined the Dredd Sequel fan campaign.  And no, I'm not referring to a sequel of Stallone 90's turn at Judge Dredd. Please forget that ever happened. This campaign is for the film released in 2012 starring Karl Urban.  And today, Sept. 18th, Dredd fans are being called to a Day of Action!

When I got the email about the fan campaign, I admit my first thought was "pfff. That movie went nowhere at the box office so it probably sucked liked the first one. " Plus, I haven't read a lot of Judge Dredd comics. Then I promptly forgot about it......until I was going through Netflix and found it. So I figured why not?

Early Review: Battling Boy

By Reboot

Today I'll be reviewing Paul Pope's Battling Boy put out by First Second Books.  I've really liked what I've seen from First Second so I was excited to finally be reviewing something they put out.  Additionally, I was excited to finally read something from Paul Pope.

Full disclosure, prior to reading this I was fairly unfamiliar with Paul Pope's work.  I've seen his work before and I knew he was very talented, but I had just not gotten around to reading one of his works.  There are a lot of authors I still want to get around to reading.  It wasn't that he was even low on my list; for whatever reason it just didn't happen until now.  I also have not watched Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad yet.  Again, not because they're low on my list.  I'm sure when I finally watch them I'll enjoy them, but it hasn't happened yet.

Happy 3rd Birthday [IGH]!!!

That right, we have been around for three whole years!  It's kinda crazy to think it has been three years when only yesterday Wysefyre and I were sitting down and working on that first post.  So long ago and yet it was almost yesterday.

This past year has seen our family grow with the contributions of BatHobbit, MisterJackal, Poohbear and Reboot.  We have also seen our fanbase explode, with tons of new geeks reading or meme hunting.  Having you all on this crazy, wild ride makes it all worth it!  Still, we like input.  Tell us what you wanna see, or have us cover or film poorly with our phones and I can promise we will try to make it happen.  (Yoda was wrong, there is try.)

Like every year, our anniversary is a precursor to NYCC, and we shall be there!  Which means another con in a bag, so keep that in mind when you send us suggestions! [insertgeekhere] has been a blast to be a part of and I speak for the whole [IGH] fam when I say we can't wait to see what we come up with next!

Review: Conan the Barbarian #19

By Reboot

Today I'm reviewing Dark Horse Comics' Conan the Barbarian #19, the start of Black Stones: Part 1 written by Brian Wood with art by Paul Azaceta and colors by Dave Stewart.  Though this is a continuation of Brian Wood's run, it is a decent jumping on point being the start of a new arc, so don't dismiss this title solely for the scary #19 on the cover.  If that's not enough to persuade you, keep reading!

This adventure follows Conan and Belit sailing on the Tigress in the Western Ocean, causing some pirate related mayhem along the way.  In this particular story, there are these scary Black Stone thingies that do stuff I don't wanna tell you because you should read it.  For the sake of clarification, they do not do good things.  We also get a mix of seafaring in addition to creepy small town craziness all in one issue!

[IGH] At The Movies: Kick-Ass 2

By BatHobbit, our newest contributor!

The original Kick-Ass was the antithesis of the modern Super-Hero formula. The hero had no skills, no genius intellect, no fortune, no training and no special powers. He was an average geeky teenager who decided there was no reason for people not to be real super heroes. The movie poked fun at hero tropes, while never mocking heroes as a whole and, in fact, celebrating super heroes in a way most super-films don’t. If Kick-Ass was the irreverent response to Batman Begins, Kick-Ass 2 is a direct retort to The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises– sharing their exploration of hero retirement, escalation, mourning and repercussions.

Just a heads up, minor spoilers after the break.

Review: Mini Comics Included

By Reboot

Today I review Fifth World Studios' Mini Comics Included.  This is the brain child of comic industry veterans Tim Seeley, Steve Seeley, and Michael Moreci with various artists and encompasses 6 separate 16 page mini comics.

This started out as a Kickstarter project back in March.  This project was a nail-biter but in the end received the funding it needed.  If you look over the page you can see why.  This is the kind of fun, original project that Kickstarter was designed to encourage.

Mini Comics Included is a throwback to 80's style mini comics that came with certain action figures.  And they all have names that fit the style like Superbeasts, Omega, Colt Noble and Prime-8's.  The stories for each comic fit the time period and style well too.  You'll find little snip-its of bigger and greater worlds written with the whimsy and optimism of an 80's cartoon like He-Man with the charm and camp of a dime store novel.

It becomes very obvious from reading these comics that everyone who worked on it thought long and hard about the worlds they were creating and they fleshed them out well beyond what we actually see.  This helped allow me and anyone else who reads this to jump right in to a fully realized world.  They get you to care about the characters and the world they set up right away, and leave you wishing you had more to read while being satisfied with what you just experienced.

For those of you who didn't pledge to the Kickstarter campaign, you can buy all 6 for $10 through Fifth World Studios and all of the issues will be signed.  Copies begin shipping this month so get on this!  It's an unbeatable price for comics jam packed with fun and nostalgia made by people that get it and know how to make you get it too.  Do yourself a favor and add Mini Comics Included to your collection.

I Survived SDCC and All I Got Is This Giveaway!

Stellar view from the
convention center
Hi kiddies!  I'm back from my worldwide traveling, which of course included that lovely week in sunny San Diego.  Just a side note, going to San Diego from the humidity-filled hell that is New York City is amazing wonderful.  Like escaping the Rancor only to find yourself in a library stocked with all the books.....and Benedict Cumberbatch is your manservant.  Just mull it over, you'll thank me later.

Review: Bluffton

By Reboot

This week, I review the original graphic novel Bluffton written and illustrated by Matt Phelan and put out by Candlewick Press.  Matt Phelan hias previously a Scott O'Dell Award for his first graphic novel, The Storm in the Barn and was nominated for two Eisners for another graphic novel of his, Around the World.  Bluffton is slated to be released this month.

To start, this is historical fiction piece taking place in the early 19th century revolving around a young boy, Henry, in small town in Michigan not far from The Actor's Colony of Bluffton.  This is a time period I happen to already enjoy.  And to make it even better, it involves a young Buster Keaton and the vaudeville scene.  I enjoy going to vaudeville shows to this day so it would be hard for me not to dig this book.

Matt gets me again with the water colors.  I love water colors.  I have a commissioned art piece done in water color and they're just great.  Everything about the illustrations in this book works exceedingly well.

And then there's the story telling.  This story is jam packed with heart.  It was so sweet and wonderful and pulled me right in all the way to the end.  I had a hard time not getting a little choked up by the end (no spoilers, don't worry).

If I had to pick one thing that could have made it perfect, it have been maybe changing up the lettering a bit.  I understand hand lettering is long and tedious and it is somewhat ridiculous to expect Matt Phelan to hand letter an entire graphic novel.  However, there are at least a few points in the book where the digital lettering pulls you out of the absolutely beautiful aesthetic that Matt has graciously created for all of us to enjoy.  If anything, this critique is more of a praise for his art than anything else.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for adults and kids alike.  Anyone that enjoys historical fiction, this time piece in particular, or just a light hearted adventure with a little drama, then this is a story for you.

Review: Batman '66 #1

By Reboot

Today I'm going over issue #1 of the digital-first now in print Batman '66.  This new look at this iconic incarnation of Batman is written by Jeff Parker and illustrated by Jonathan Case.  The cover is drawn by Mike Allred and colored by Laura Allred.  I made that a separate sentence because it's the Allred's and they are incredible.  I don't think I need to explain myself any further.

[IGH] at the Movies: Pacific Rim

The IGH team went to an advance screening of Pacific Rim, the newest offering from Guillermo Del Toro.  Gotta love those advanced screenings!  Here are our thoughts about Robots VS. Aliens!

Wilderowens' Thoughts

I admit, I went into Pacific Rim with low expectations.  The trailers just didn't get me excited.  The film also had some mixed early reviews, so it wasn't at the top of my list.  While I enjoyed it more than I expected, it wasn't the best movie in my view.

It had a great concept but the plot got too convoluted and busy.
For non-spoilery example, the mind link that controls the robots, aka the drift, was poorly executed, even though a good concept.  Way too many side stories in two hours meant a lot of random plot holes that bothered me.  Additionally, the now convoluted plot required characters that just constantly spewed exposition, in the form of scientists played by Burn Gorman and Charlie Day.  While they served their purpose, it was tiring to see them pop-up on screen, just to pick up the story and move it along, especially when they didn't always make sense.    On top of that, these two also provided the comedic relief, so it got to the point that I was rooting for their death.

The leading man Charlie Hunnam was definitely a disappointment, but the majority of the cast lacked passion in their performance.   Idris Elba and Max Martini were the only actors that really carried their roles well, with a special shout-out to Ron Perlman with his over the top performance.  One highlight of this cast was the fact it was fairly diverse.  Still, I would have liked more passionate performances from a group of people trying to save the human race.

The saving grace for this film is  the scope and special effects.  This is a must watch film for the big screen and preferably in 3-D.  It is amazing to see large and coming right at you.  Setting the fight scenes in major cities gave the robots/aliens tremendous scale and even in the fake IMAX looked great.  The 3-D worked with the fight rather than making it harder to follow, which is a rarity.  The sound effects were also amazing, which in my opinion added to the realism of the characters.  The sound seems to be getting better and better in films and this year has been the proof of that.

See Pacific Rim for the fight scenes, or for the over the top concept, or for the effects.   Don't see it if you are going to want a solid story, since it will disappoint.

Wysefyre's Thoughts

I went into Pacific Rim knowing only two things - Guillermo Del Toro directed it, & it had monsters vs. robots. Del Toro’s a phenomenal director but live-action monsters vs. robots on screen? It seemed like a recipe for disaster. Turns out I was wrong, but there are three categories we need to talk about because while the movie's enjoyable, it's not without flaws.

I felt the overall concept of the movie was a very strong one - monsters attack the world, the world unites to create robots to defeat them, & we get to see how it all turns out. However, somewhere in the script writing process, the plot gets muddled. It sticks with the main concept, but because they want to have character development & make the story interesting, the writers started to throw in all kinds of b-plots. It felt like they were trying to do too much in too little amount of time. Also, some of the dialogue, particularly during the fight sequences, was terrible. Luckily, the movie had a stellar cast t0 help make some of the clunky dialogue work.
*Side note, Highlight to read (contains HUGE spoilers of the ending) –
[ Have to give a big shout-out to the writers for NOT playing up the romance angle. That final moment on the raft was much more intimate without the kiss. Thank you.]

Charlie Hunnam (our dashing hero), who’s a really good actor, seemed incredibly wooden in this. There were some good moments, but mostly, he was just okay. I felt he was the weak link in the cast.

As the only female in the cast, Rinko Kikuchi held her own. I really liked her & wish she had more screen time. Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, & Max Martini were all great. Elba was respectable yet badass, Perlman chewed the scenery like nobody's business, Day was amusing, & Martini was wonderfully stoic, but the actor who I just adored, & who has become one of my all-time favorite character actors, was Burn Gorman. Other than not being able to hide how British he is (nor should he ever try to), it seems like there is no type he can't play. He stole the movie for me.

Let's talk effects. HOLY ACROPHOBIA! From the opening shot, I knew that the movie was going to be something special. The effects were stunning. The fights were amazing, but the effects that I kept thinking about were the ones that gave the audience a sense of height to the Jaegars (robots) and Kaiju (monsters). They looked enormous & took my breath away. However, there were many moments spent thinking about Voltron. I don't want to spoil that for you, but when you see it, you'll know.

One final thought  - I don't normally say this, but I would recommend seeing it in 3-D. It truly enhanced the movie.  So far, Pacific Rim is my favorite movie of the summer. I give it four out of five Jaegars.

Our [IGH] team members quick reactions:

Poohbear - Let me tell you, I went into this movie thinking it was going to be another Cloverfield. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I'm not into alien takeover movies or apocalyptic movies where humans are the ones to suffer and ultimately die. In this though, Del Toro focuses on the human aspects and he made all the right choices in the film. From the story, to the character development to the visuals, to the effects, to the casting, to the non-love-love story, I loved it! For my full review go here

Reboot -  If you're looking for a nearly mindless, totally over the top, soundtrack of the week, cliche action movie with every overused line in the book crammed in it, then this is the movie for you.  And let me clarify that by saying it is absolutely 100% okay to totally get into a movie like this one for those reasons.

[IGH] on Books: WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S STAR WARS

A little known fact is that George Lucas stole Star Wars from the world's greatest playwright (and thief) William Shakespeare.   Ok, that's complete bunk but it would be pretty amazing.  Still, this wonderful mash-up of Shakespearean English and Scruffy Nerf Herders exists in Ian Doescher's mind.  Out last week from Quirk Books is his edition of William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope.

Now, I'm just going to assume that anyone reading this knows the story of Star Wars: A New Hope and not recap it here for you.  If you don't know A New Hope, leave wherever you are RIGHT NOW and find the Star Wars original trilogy and watch it now.  Seriously, you need to see what all the buzz is about.

Review: Catalyst Comix #1

By Reboot

Today I'm reviewing another installment of Dark Horse Comics' superhero revival, Catalyst Comix #1.  This comic is divided into three distinct stories in the same universe (one lead story and two back ups) all written by Joe Casey with art by Dan McDaid, Paul Maybury, and Ulises Farinas with characters originally created by Barbara Kesel.

The book will rotate lead stories every three issues and starts with Frank Wells aka Titan.  I think this is probably for the best.  I like this format and I think it will help Dark Horse differentiate itself a bit from the big two since they don't have too many anthology books like that (They do, however, have Legends of the Dark Knight and Adventures of Superman).

Review: King Conan #2

By Reboot

Today, Issue #2 of 6 of the Conan series King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon by Dark Horse Comics hits the shelves. This is scripted by Timothy Truman, with art by Tomas Giorello and adapted from the novel of the same name by Conan creator Robert E. Howard.  After reviewing issue #1 of this last month, I was on the fence with this miniseries which compelled me to read on. Will this issue sway me one way or the other? Read on to find out!

[IGH] at the Movies: World War Z

The other night, Wilderowens and I attended a screening of World War Z. I wasn't in the best of moods, thanks to bad weather and some disorganization with the people running the event, so my already low expectations, were running even lower when the movie started, but I love when a movie surprises me.

The first thing I noticed was how much better the 3D was on this compared to Man of Steel. Without any fancy tricks, there was a lot of depth to the film. Five minutes in and I was already thinking, "This is how you do 3D." Was it necessary? No. But unlike Man of Steel, where the 3D did absolutely nothing to enhance the film, WWZ used it well. There were many beautiful and interesting shots that were enhanced by the 3D.

I loved the international feel of the movie. Brad Pitt's character, Gerry, goes all over the globe, and I thought it really opened up the story. So many zombie movies stay in such a small area that it becomes easy to forget that there are attacks all over. WWZ made sure you understood that this was a worldwide situation. *SIDE NOTE - It was so nice to see New York not get destroyed for once. You get a brief glimpse, but none of the real action happens in New York and I was so happy about that. I know NY is iconic, but it gets really tiresome to see the places you walk by get destroyed on a regular basis.

Daniella Kertesz & Brad Pitt
This is really Brad Pitt's movie. There are several supporting characters, but because Brad Pitt was constantly on the move, they didn’t get to stick around long enough. I enjoyed his interactions with his family. When he's talking to his kids, you could see that he's only partially acting because his paternal nature was just naturally coming out. This wasn't the type of role I had expected from him. I thought he'd be playing more of an action hero, but he didn't. Gerry was a guy who had been in action and could handle himself, but he's no Stallone or Schwarzenegger. He's not looking for a fight; he's looking for answers. If anything, Daniella Kertesz' Segen was much more of a badass than he was. She's a relative newcomer, having done some work in Israel, but I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of her. Of all the other actors in the movie, she was the standout.

The real reason why WWZ surprised me is because I didn't expect it to be as tense as it was. The writing team, which consisted of Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, Damon Lindelof, and J. Michael Stracznski, and director Marc Forster, understood that what's scary is not necessarily lots of blood and guts flying around while the zombies eat, though that is pretty scary. What really messes with the mind are the quiet moments. Those moments where the audience knows something is about to happen, but the characters don't, so everyone is holding their breath, waiting for them to find out. It's also
not always showing everything and letting our imaginations run wild. That's what WWZ did. It created suspense. I'm not ashamed to admit there were a few moments where I had to cover my eyes because I couldn't handle the buildup. In a way, WWZ reminded me of the old horror movies for the 1930's and 40's - some cheesy effects, (the climbing zombies looked weird, and the other zombies didn't look great until the end, when they had more close ups) but delivers on suspense and thrills.

I haven't read the book yet, so I can't tell you how it compares, but the way I see it, any movie that causes me to reevaluate my zombie apocalypse survival plan is a good one. Give it try.
