Free Comic Book Titles Have Been Released!

This morning, Diamond Comics released the full list of Free Comic Book Day titles.  Now we have five whole months to sit and dream about the wonder of that magical day!  I can't wait for May 5, 2012!

In case you don't know about Free Comic Book Day, it is a day of Free Comic Books.  I know, right? It's awesome!  It was started by the industry to encourage new and lapsed readers to give comics a chance.  This is a great day to take that friend, sibling or random stranger from the bus stop and go to your local participating comic shop to try some comics!

Just a word of warning though: Your local comic shop doesn't participate for free.  They purchase these books at a reduced rate.  So, don't forget to say please and thank you when you get your free books, and it doesn't hurt to buy something neither...  It's up to us to keep our local businesses thriving!

As you go through this list, if any titles are a must read, please let your LCS know now!  They are ordering these books very soon, so if you wait, you will miss out!

My childhood me got exciting news this week with the announcement of a Carmen Sandiego movie. Both Wysefyre and I are huge fans, so it's been a giddy week. This also serves as a warning to JLo that she cannot mess this up!

Marvel joins the rest of the comics world with going same day and date digital. Feels like another nail in the local comic shop coffin but makes sense for Marvel.

The White House came out and officially denied any contact with extraterrestrials. I totally believe them. I mean, any government agency that might deal with aliens is probably removed from White House completely for plausible deniability.

NYCC '11: The Truth about October's FCBD

A lot of news comes out from New York Comic Con. It's hard to keep track of every piece, and no news outlet gets it all at first. Often, we even contradict each other. So, when I get a chance, I always get more details.


I began to see one-liner updates that there would be a new Free Comic Book Day in October. Personally, I think it is a great idea. So great that I went to the Diamond Comics Distributors booth to get more details.


Once I asked, I got a grimaced, aggravated look from the booth staff.  The DCD staffer I spoke with explained that the event was still in planning and nothing was confirmed.


Then, he introduced me to Bill Schanes, the Vice President of Purchasing for Diamond. Bill was the one that made the announcement at the Retailer Breakfast where this all started. He said it went down like this: Bill asked if the retailers would be interested in doing an October FCBD, possibly Halloween themed. A fair number of retailers raised their hands to express interest in taking part. Then he told the room that the day was still in early planning mode. After he left the room, reports came out online stating it was definitely happening and very soon.


Bill has no idea how it ballooned online to definitely happening. The only definite I got is that it will not be as big as the May FCBD.


Please keep in mind, they still want this Halloween FCBD to happen. Diamond Comics does events like this to benefit the retailers and fans. If you want a second FCBD, go to your local comics retailer and tell them you want it! Hopefully, we can show enough support to make this happen next year.

Wow, has everyone recovered from this past week? As the world changes and history is written right before our eyes, we still had a crazy geek news week to cover.


Big Comic news of the week, Diamond and iVerse are teaming up to sell digital comics in retail, brick-and-mortar comic stores. This sounds like a great and/or horrible idea. The Beat got an exclusive with Diamond's head of digital distribution about how this will work, but iFanboy's Jason Wood still isn't convinced. He raises some great points and I hope Diamond has an ace up their sleeve.

I am sad to report that Activision announced the end of Guitar Hero. *tears This great unit of games just hasn't been pulling in the moolah as of late, and the licensing fees are just crazy. I love Geekologie's coverage of this, and yes, pushing colored buttons does make me feel like a bad ass.

Marvel was all over the press this week. The biggest movie news of the week is the release of 3 Marvel trailers including the Thor, Captain America and X-MEN: First Class trailers. In case you missed it, you should watch them right now. And since this week was crazy Marvel week, they also announced a press conference for Feb. 15 about Moon Knight, their next big thing after their release of the big thing, Fear Itself. I am digging this teaser art for Moon Knight, but can we get through one big event at a time guys? It's hard to keep up with all of this!




There are also plenty of people taking issue with Marvel this week. Ryan at The Weekly Crisis has some good points against Marvel's new plan of killing a major character every quarter to boost sales. Our own WyseFyre also has a bone to pick with Marvel about their PSA comic about suicide.

There has been a lot of comic con ticket craziness in the past week, that I am excited to get past. Best con news of the past week? This touching article about TempleCon by Total Fan Girl.
