The other day Wysefyre and I were rereading texts we have sent and decided that we were funny.  In fact, we crack ourselves up.  We can probably crack other people up.  Also, we figure that very few people have realized there are two of us, so here is a inside peek of our very disturbed brains.

Spring Cleaning Your Comic Pull List

Hello Spring! Traditionally, spring brings showers, flowers and cleaning.  With all of the traditional spring cleaning going on, make sure you take care of the other aspects of your life. One area I try to take care of is cleaning up my comic pull list. Making sure that you are happy with the pull list is good for you and your local comic shop. It saves you money on your purchases, and it prevents excess stock from cluttering up the shelves.

I have worked out a 6 step process in refreshing your pull list. Please make sure you have enough time to
dedicate to this!

1: Contact your Local Comic Shop for a copy of your pull list.
While I'm sure you are thinking that you know everything on your list. It is possible that something might be on your list that hasn't been published in a while or was added by mistake. This means you won't forget a single title.

2: Pick out the comics that you are dying to read.
You know, the ones where you put down the latest issue and can't believe it is another whole month until you find out what happens. These are definitely keepers and should go on your new list.

3: Look at what you are behind in reading but still buying.
Ask yourself why you are still buying them. Is it because you genuinely love the series or are you just buying because you like the writer/artist/character? Take a hour or two to read the next issue(s). If you want to keep reading, it's a keep. If not, delete it.

4: Look at what's left.
If you are buying something you aren't even reading, it is a delete.

5: What else are you reading?
Take a look at the comics you have been buying that aren't on your list.  If they are something you are dying to read, add them.

6: Add up how much everything costs.
If you can't afford it, go back and prune some more. On average, prices fall between $2.99 and 3.99. You can check a price at Diamond Comics Previews. If you are feeling lazy, you can ballpark it by using $3.99 for all of them except for DC titles.

Now just submit the shiny new list to your LCS and make sure they know it is replacing the old one.


Congrats! Now you can go to get your exciting comics every week and even have some spare room to add new series!

Road to NYCC '11: Find Your Geek-Mate!

There are so many amazing and unique things that happen at Comic Con. Any geek can walk in and find their niche. It's a place where we geeks are surrounded by our own kind, plus lots of toys and comics. So, when they announced the Lightning Fast Speed Dating would be holding sessions at NYCC last year, I thought it was a perfect idea. I didn't get to make it unfortunately, but I heard some wonderful stories. I even know that there were couples made by the end of the weekend. Well, they are back again for a second year in a row, with a chance for you to find a new friend or even more.

It can be said that geeks, like most people, have trouble dating. I know it can seem uncomfortable to just go sit down and talk to someone. You have to put yourself out there. This is different though. If it were just a run-of-the-mill speed dating event, you would have no idea who you might meet. At this, you know that you have something in common. For those two minutes you are together, even if there is no connection, you can at least talk about the last episode of Fringe, argue the benefits of DC52 or who shot first.

This year, they have added a new project; a geek dating documentary show will be filming at NYCC. The show will be following around a few geeks and (hopefully!) watch them find their match. A lot of the details are still under wraps, so I don't have a show name yet; I do know that it will be shown on a major cable network.

Now, before you start asking if some tall guy in a suit will be giving away a rose, I can assure you that the show has more substance than the standard dating show. That scenario was what I was picturing at first until I spoke with the showrunner, Michael Gara. A geek himself, Gara is so committed to making this a true and honest show. The show premise is that it is a chance for that guy/girl who doesn't get a date at the drop of hat to find someone. Gara told me each episode would follow 3-4 people as they try to find love. There are no producer organized surprises or date coaches behind the scenes either. These are actually real geeks, just like you and me.

The best part of talking with Gara was hearing how much he cared. He wants geeks to find love and be happy. As he put it, "I think this is lightning in a bottle and I don't want to blow it." That makes me feel that us geeks are safe in his hands.

If you are interested in trying for the show, right now they are still looking for girls to take part. Their biggest requirement is that they want honest, true people that aren't heavy daters. What is a Geek Anyways?

There has be a lot of commenting on people's "geek cred" and if they are a "true geek" or just pandering for attention.  There has even been people challenging other about whether they are a geek in public forums.  This really got me thinking about the geek dilemma.  We throw that word around but what does geek really mean?

Now, as geek is currently used by the general public, it refers to those awesome people who enjoy an aspect of pop culture. This area of pop culture is comprised of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, magic, wands, swords of metal or light, space, the final frontier, wii elbow, lands that are far, far away, heroes - super or gritty, villains - evil and likable, and cupcakes. This is not a complete list but should cover the general public's view of the term in question.


So I did the nerdiest thing I could do: I looked Geek up in the dictionary. Then I looked up Money Laundering, just for kicks.


Definition of GEEK
(copied and pasted directly from Webster's Dictionary Online)

1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake

2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked

3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity <computer geek>

So let's look at our options. Number 1 is definitely the oldest meaning of the word. I'm going to use my knowledge to make some educated guesses about assuming that we all aren't secretly wishing to bite off chicken/snake heads (if you are, huzzah for you), but that knocks one down.


As for number 2, it kinda fits the general public's image of geeks. Except....apparently it is cool now to be into "geeky things" so maybe this is another out of date. Don't get me wrong, it can apply but if this is how a person defines themself, it is kind of sad.


And now, it's time for number 3. In case you didn't guess, this is the big finish! So number 3 says an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity is a geek. Well, we already knew that from our general public description. There is one thing that sticks out though. Technology field is an example of a type of geek, not the definition of one. So we could replace technology with just about anything. Like [insert hobby here] geek. Finance, needlepoint, chicken heads, disney channel, history....the list can go on and on.


So, in the end, anyone that is an enthusiast or expert can be a geek. If someone challenges you, on creds or terminology, then send them to me. Unless, of course they want you to bite the head off a chicken.  Then you're on your own.
