Strange Attractors Gets A Rebirth!

Out tomorrow is a reprinting of Charles Soule's Strange Attractors #1.  It was originally released as a graphic novel from Archaia but will now be a five issue comic series from Boom! Studios, including a new short story, Antithesis.

The story is a chaos math problem, wrapped up with a compelling character in Dr. Brownfield, that he uses to continually try and save the city.  When he realizes he needs help, he calls upon Heller Wilson, a young math grad student.  The story is conveyed through amazing art by Greg Scott as well as Complexity Maps by Robert Saywitz that are one of the most fantasical things I have ever seen.     

5 Wishes for the new Star Trek Show

The new Star Trek series coming to CBS is a big deal. To get ST back on TV where it (arguably) belongs, to see new explorations and social commentary every week is a dream come true. I can't explain how excited and hopeful that I am to see what this will become. But I was still wary to get excited. However, once I saw that teaser trailer a week or so ago, I was hooked. Suddenly, all I could think about was what I wanted to see in the new show.

Here is my top 5 wishlist for the new Star Trek series. 

(Note: I decided to leave the "Continuing Roddenberry's vision" off the list. If his son, Rod Roddenberry, can't ensure that as an Executive Producer on the show, then I don't know who can.)

Star Trek: TNG Swimwear Has Arrived!

Set your eyeballs to stun! ThinkGeek has released a line of gorgeous Star Trek: The Next Generation swim/beach wear.

Random Thoughts: Am I the Only One Who Noticed Snape taught Harry his Signature Move?

So, I'm going through one of my annual Harry Potter rereads, and after reading the Chamber of Secrets for the gazillionth time, it hit me. Snape taught Harry "Expelliarmus." The spell that went on to become Harry's "signature" move was introduced to him by a man he loathed.

When I say I've read the books a gazillion times, I'm only sort of exaggerating. Okay, I'm exaggerating a lot, but I really do reread the series at least once a year, usually two or three times, depending on how busy that year is. This is the first time I've made this connection. Maybe I'm a little slow, but whenever I see a post or listicle with Potter facts, I'm all over them, and I can't recall ever coming across anyone saying anything about the Snape - Expelliarmus connection.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Trailers

In the past few days, we've gotten not one but two trailers for upcoming Trek projects.  It's all part of building off of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

First off, we got the tiniest teaser trailer for the TV show, which will be arriving early 2017.  I am digging the new logo, which is a modernization of the original symbol.  I don't want to influence anyone, but is the start of this remind anyone else of early seasons Stargate travel?  Still, super excited for this new show.  Check out the all too quick teaser after the break.

NYCC '16 New Guests - Cast of Gotham

It was announced today that cast members from FOX's Gotham will be stirring up some fun at this year's New York Comic Con. Among them will be Erin Richards, the delightfully disturbed and obsessive Barbara Kean, young Bruce Wayne himself, David Mazouz, and the fiendishly funny fan favorite, Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin, or as he's known to the outside world, Robin Lord Taylor. 

As a fan of the show, I'm hoping more cast members will be added, but that's only because I would love to see them interact outside of the show. This is a great trio, and I'm sure they will sprinkle NYCC '16 with Gotham's dark, gritty, and twisted magic.

[IGH] at the Movies: Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War opened on May 6th. After anxiously waiting and trying to free up my schedule, I was finally able to see it this past weekend. I can’t tell you what a relief that was. I’ve been avoiding all mentions of Civil War on my social media. It hasn’t been an easy task. I’m really proud of my friends for not spoiling the movie, because it was worth the wait.

There are a lot of reviews out there that can better dissect what works and doesn’t work, so I’m not going to dwell on that. Instead, I want to talk about some of the things that made an impression on me.

Bye-Bye Agent Carter

In a move that surprises no one, but is still quite upsetting, ABC has officially given Agent Carter the axe. 

I’m having a hard time writing about this, because I don’t understand why ABC doesn’t realize how important Peggy Carter is. She’s a smart, wickedly funny, spirited woman who kicks ass, and who has to contend with being female in the 40s-50’s. The show had a great support cast, with atypical characters such as Jarvis and Sousa, and even better, the show wasn’t dark and gritty. That’s not to say dark and gritty events didn’t transpire, but this was show that also operated in the light with bright colors.

Killing Joke Goes Animated In The Best Way!

If there is one story every comic fan has ever wanted to see come to life, it is Batman: The Killing Joke.  This is the pinnacle of Joker stories and one of the best Bat-family stories ever.  To see this coming to animated release from Warner Bros., where DC Comics stories have consistently shined, is amazingly wonderful.  Just that is great news, since fans have been requesting this fan favorite to be created for a long time.  But then they announced who will be voicing Batman and The Joker.  I might have died from joy right there.

Star Trek Online Makes a Big Move!

Coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Fall 2016 is the free-to-play MMORPG Star Trek Online.  

The game will feature a reworked user interface to accommodate the console’s unique controllers, as well as graphical improvements, with the goal of being more accessible to newcomers and more fun for gamers of all levels.

The press release reads:

"Star Trek Online is well into its sixth year and showing no signs of stopping. 

Over our storied history we’ve seen a new faction, two level cap increases, more episodes than any 5 seasons of any Star Trek series, the creation of over 100,000 player generated missions, and celebrity voice work from every era of Star Trek. 

With all of those accomplishments there is still another frontier yet to explore, the console space.This fall, Star Trek Online will be launching simultaneously on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. 

Our goal is to deliver the same high quality Star Trek experience to players on these consoles, with some additional upgrades to make the transition to the console space a smooth and natural experience. 

Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play into a game that plays well with a 12 button controller. 

We focused on getting the controls right before we began work in earnest on this project, because we knew the game had to be as tactical, fun, and accessible as the PC game that preceded it.A combination of radial menus and streamlining of some HUD elements created a game that is easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play. 

Review: House of Penance #2

After enjoying Dark Horse’s House of Penance #1 by Peter Tomasi (w) and Ian Bertram (a) as much as I did, I figured I should give issue #2 a go. So, did issue #2 keep the momentum going after House of Penance came charging strongly out the gate last month?

One of the first things I noticed as I read this issue is the pacing. As the first issue is a slow, methodical build-up to the unknown, the second issue wastes no time jumping in head first. References the characters bring up hints at the time period, such as how the construction workers mention the Spanish-American War and Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, but as the first issue takes the time to slowly drag you down into this world via the time period, issue #2 focuses nearly exclusively on the psychological horror of it all.
