Marvel's Captain America: Civil War Trailer Gives Us Spider-Man

The new trailer for Marvel's Captain America: Civil War has finally arrived, and it packs a wallop! Not only do we get a better sense of how the story is going to unfold, but we also get a glimpse at how Spider-Man is going to fit into everything. Check it out below.

I'm excited to see Spidey, but I'm not sure how I feel about his suit. It leans a little too much towards the comic books. Normally, I'd be happy to see more comic book elements in the movies, but in this case, Spider-Man's vibrant red suit looks out of place. I hope it's just one awkward shot, and he looks fine for the rest of his appearance. But other than that, this trailer is making me wish May 6th would get here quickly.

The official synopsis for the movie is "Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire  for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability."

What do you think about Spider-Man's appearance? And does this trailer make you more or less excited to see the movie?

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016

Quicksilver: Top Nine Things You Need to Know

Quicksilver (aka Pietro Maximoff) has been all the talk this past week, with confirmation that the character will be in The Avengers 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past, thus causing two studios to fight over him.  With all this Quicksilver love going on, it’s safe to say he is the new big man on campus.  For everyone who isn't completely up to date on this character (I admit my knowledge of Quicksilver is limited), here is a list of his highlights.

2012: The Year of.....

Borrowed from cloudtimes.org

Another year at its end, 2012 brought us a lot of stuff that we celebrated or cried over as the year went on...Disney buying Star Wars, The Hobbit, Marvel Now, and another failed apocalypse. However, some of the best moments came from one persons mind. Yes, you have probably guessed who I am talking about.

[IGH] at the Movies: The Avengers

Yes, we got to see The Avengers early. We are that cool. "Marvel" at our awesomeness. But enough bragging, here is what we thought.

Wilderowens' Thoughts

Marvel has been soundly beating DC on the big screen for the past few years and they just raised the bar.  The Avengers was everything you could want in a superhero flick.

For all of the Joss naysayers, you were so wrong. Our man Whedon stayed true to the characters while adding his own brand of humor in the mix. Each character was explored and had a path to walk through the film.

NYCC '11: Oh God, It's Saturday

Well, we survived the biggest day at the con. The crowds were insane and way too big but once again, I'm amazed with how much I got done. Here are some of our highlights from the biggest day at the con:

- Getsuyobi met the CEO of Zlango and got to test out their new messenging app featuring Walking Dead icons.

- I went to the DC The Edge/ Dark panel and saw so much upcoming art! iVampire looks so amazing and is definitely a must read.

- Wysefyre and Getsuyobi camped out in IGN for 6 hours and saw all of the major announcements, including The Walking Dead and Avengers panels. Apparently Mark Ruffalo surprised the crowd with an appearance and Tom Hiddleston & Clark Gregg even broke into song.

- While they camped out, I went on a huge walk through the floor. I spoke with Diamond Comics about their October FCBD and I have so much more to share with you!

- I spent over an hour hanging at the Dark Horse booth and spoke with Angel and Faith's Christos Gage and Rebekah Isaacs and Conan's Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan.  Dark Horse has been so great to us during the con!

- I also swung by I Am A Stuffed Animal for a very special photo...

Finally, we all ended the night at Geek Girls Network's Geek-Out, with a bunch of very, very tired geeks.

We are definitely spending more time on the floor for the last day of con. Sunday is a great day for deals, since no vendor wants to lug too much stuff home. Make sure you go prepared to shop!!!

See you on the floor!!!

Review: The Avengers #12.1

The Point One Initiative marches on with The Avengers #12.1. This book, like many Point Ones, has a lot riding on it because of the movie property. Can writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Bryan Hitch make me an Avengers reader?

WARNING:
This post contains face-melting spoilers.
Read at your face’s risk.
If symptoms continue for more than 4 hours, contact [insertgeekhere].

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this story. Some of them are minor but none of them are positive.  In the beginning of the book, they list the main Avengers for the new readers.   When the team goes to rescue Spider-Woman, they don't even have half of them there! Hawkeye is in one panel with no lines, so it's a good thing he made it on the cover.  I could excuse that but some of the rescue team don't even get introduced. A lot of characters are involved with The Avengers, how am I supposed to know who is who?  New readers may be totally lost by this, while Marvel readers will probably be able to follow this.

And when did Wolverine get a beak?
The story really dragged the entire time. We watch the Avengers bicker for a while, get really angry, beat up some idiots, and then find out that a really bad villain is back. I felt so bored the whole time, and when a fight scene finally showed up, it took two panels. Even with all of that time for talking, I never felt like I was connecting with the story or the characters. None of the characters were focused on for more than a line except Spider-Woman, and can anyone explain why she had to be naked?  I just don't understand why that was necessary. I have no idea what in that story was supposed to make me keep reading. I imagine the hook was supposed to be that Ultron was back but by the time he showed up, I was just happy the issue was almost over.

This is where I start showing what I have learned about Marvel U from Point Ones and step out of my n00b shell a bit. In the scene where The Avengers assemble, we see a lot of characters, almost the whole hero roster of the Marvel Universe. Now, here is where Marvel lost any potential readers from reading Avengers. Why is Ben Grimm in a Fantastic Four uniform? It could be a continuity thing, or just for old time's sake. In the end, I could really forgive it. It's just that Marvel went out of their way to publicize Johnny Storm's death and the end of the Fantastic Four. Major news outlets covered it for the masses. Any potential new readers brought in may be confused and any lapsed readers may just get irritated. I would have kept continuity in Point Ones, especially any issue where a movie is coming out. No matter how different the movie plot is, it does help bring in new readers.

I just don't think this would have worked for either new or lapsed readers.  New readers were not given enough background about characters (like their names) and lapsed readers would have been irritated with the lack of continuity, not to mention the boring story.  I would not recommend this for any readers.

Marvel's Point One: where should I start?

So as I was reading Fantastic Four #587, I saw this ad:

I was excited about Marvel: Point One when they announced in November, but since then, I kinda forgot about it. It just seemed so far off! I am hopeful that I can break into this world without too much confusion. No more waiting, it starts today with Invincible Iron Man.
Now, I need to decide what to read. I wish I could read them all, but my budget doesn't allow for that. So far, I'm definitely going to read Amazing Spider-man, Invincible Iron Man, Deadpool and Avengers. I'm torn on getting Captain America and Uncanny X-Men.

For all of my fellow Marvel newbies, I promise to post reviews about how effective Point One is. Is there any other recommendations for us from more experienced Marvel readers?
